Toddler Screen Time DOES Have Development Benefits

Don’t feel so bad about letting your tot highjack your iPad while you get dinner ready – experts have found that there is a benefit to screen time

Educational apps could help boost your child’s intelligence levels, researchers have found.

In a study of four and five year old US children conducted by New York University, researchers spent six weeks looking at how the preschoolers learned to read.

Each of the children observed came from disadvantaged backgrounds and most had never been exposed to a touchscreen device before.

Half of the children were given unsupervised access to an app called ‘Learn with Homer’ for 15 minutes a day, which teaches basic reading skills, while the other half were given a maths app to play with.

At the start of the study, each of the children scored equally on a preschool literacy test. But when tested again at the end of the study, the children who use the Learn with Homer app had almost doubled their score in sound and word constructions – while the other half of the children didn’t do as well.

Each of the children observed came from disadvantaged backgrounds and most had never been exposed to a touchscreen device before.

The study’s lead researcher, Dr Susuan Neuman, said that her aim was to see how the children would respond to the challenging skill-based learning activities in Learn with Homer.

She found that the app, combined with headphones and an interactive design, caused her to think about, ‘whether this type of learning can encourage concentration for children.’
