If you live in Saudi Arabia and were hoping to name your baby Linda, Alice or Elaine, think again…
A list of 50 names that new parents can’t call their baby has been issued by Saudi Arabia.
The lengthy list includes the names Linda, Lauren, Sandy and Alice. So anyone hoping to name their tot after Grease’s leading lady will need to think of another option…
The country considers each of the names on the list to either contradict or offend the culture or religion of the kingdom or to be associated with royalty – such as Amir (prince), Sumuw (highness) and Malika (queen).
Here's the full list:
Nabiyya (female prophet)
Al Mamlaka (the kingdom)
Basmala (utterance of the name of God)
Rama (Hindu god)
Binyamin (Arabic for Benjamin)
Jibreel (angel Gabriel)
Saudi Arabia isn’t by any means the first country to ban certain names. Recently, Mexico banned Facebook, Lady Di and Robocop. And sorry Harry Potter fans – that name is off limits in Mexico, too.
Plus there are lots of other names banned worldwide – granted, you may not have been planning to call your baby some of these.
