David Beckham Opens Up About Being A Dad

Section: Celebrity Mums

David Beckham, football icon and dad of four, reveals why he was in a hurry to have children.

Yesterday, David Beckham, opened up to a Facebook crowd, revealing that he knew the moment he set eyes on the former Spice Girl, in 1997 that he wanted to have a family with her.

While promoting his new book David Beckham, which documents his 20 year football career in photos, he spoke to a global Facebook audience about his professional and personal life in a touching interview.

During his global digital book signing on Facebook yesterday, the father of four said, ‘From 21 years old, I wanted children from a young age so when I met Victoria we knew we wanted children – and we wanted them pretty fast.’

‘I wanted my children to live through my career with me and that’s why the images are so special to me,’ he added.  ‘They were there when I won almost every one of my trophies.’

Two-year-old Harper joins Cruz, eight, Romeo, 11 and eldest brother Brooklyn, 14, to make up the Beckham brood.

The dad-of-four said he gets his hard work and parenting ethic from his parents who raised him in east London.

‘My motivation comes from my working class parents who gave their life for their kids. My parents worked hard for us and we’re fortunate to have parents who worked as hard as they did,’ said Becks.

‘My mum would take us to school, pick us up from school, cook us dinner, put us to bed then clients would come over and she’d cut their hair. That’s where my work ethic comes from.’

Discussing his favourite images from the book, the father-of-four highlighted a snap of Victoria and Harper and one of him and his three sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz celebrating the end of his football career at the French club in May.

He also opened up about domestic life and revealed his favourite way to unwind after a tough day.

‘I read a book to my children,’ he said.

‘They love the Gruffalo although Brooklyn is a bit old for that now.’  Never too old for the Gruffalo Becks.

‘Harper just love fairies, she's all about fairies and princesses so I'm reading fairy books at the moment.’
