Nicole Richie On Parenting: ‘Kids Want To Be Told The Truth’

Section: Celebrity Mums

Former reality star Nicole Richie has spoken out about what she’s like as a mum – and why she’s open and honest with her children

From The Simple Life to marriage and babies, Nicole Richie appears to have dramatically altered her life in just a few short years. But the socialite refuses to change one aspect of her pre-parenthood personality – her frankness.

The mum-of-two recently chatted to Oprah Winfrey about life as a mum and how she – and husband Joel Madden, from band Good Charlotte – have learned from their own parents’ divorces to build on their relationships with their children Harlow, six, and Sparrow, four.

‘Okay, both of our parents are divorced,’ Nicole told Oprah. ‘We both have had ups and downs with our parents and we don't really have a strong example of what a healthy family life is. ‘My kids operate best when I let them have a voice’

And Nicole thinks it’s her openness with her children, which boosts their relationship.

‘They can feel it and they know you. And they know you more than you know yourself,’ she added.
