Nicole Richie On Parenting: ‘Kids Want To Be Told The Truth’

Former reality star Nicole Richie has spoken out about what she’s like as a mum – and why she’s open and honest with her children

From The Simple Life to marriage and babies, Nicole Richie appears to have dramatically altered her life in just a few short years. But the socialite refuses to change one aspect of her pre-parenthood personality – her frankness.

The mum-of-two recently chatted to Oprah Winfrey about life as a mum and how she – and husband Joel Madden, from band Good Charlotte – have learned from their own parents’ divorces to build on their relationships with their children Harlow, six, and Sparrow, four.

‘Okay, both of our parents are divorced,’ Nicole told Oprah. ‘We both have had ups and downs with our parents and we don't really have a strong example of what a healthy family life is. But, we're recognising that now, so let's work at it and let's go through this together as a team. It's been great.’

‘My kids operate best when I let them have a voice’

And Nicole thinks it’s her openness with her children, which boosts their relationship.

‘My kids operate best when I let them have a voice,’ Nicole told Oprah. ‘I really explain things to them, because really, kids want to be told the truth. They just do. They just want you to be truthful.

‘They can feel it and they know you. And they know you more than you know yourself,’ she added.

While the 32-year-old mum has stepped away from the limelight since her reality TV days, she does keep her fans up to date with photos of her life – and children – on Instagram.
