The Sunscreen Mistakes A Lot Of Parents Make...

We all know that sunscreen is an imperative for the kids on sunny days out to the beach or the park. But a recent survey has shown that nearly half of us are forgetting to apply our own sunscreen on hot day’s out.

In a survey of more than 5,200 people, carried out by Cancer Research UK and NIVEA SUN, 47 percent of parents admitted to forgetting to protect their own skin after applying their children’s sunscreen.

And whilst nine out of 10 of the UK parents surveyed made sure that their children’s skin was protected before protecting their own, 80 percent admitted to getting sunburnt themselves.

The survey also highlighted similar trends when it came to taking shade and covering up. Although almost two thirds of parents always ensured their children covered up, only 23 percent did so themselves.

Sarah Williams, senior health information officer at Cancer Research UK, says, ‘Parents need to practice what they preach and take care of their skin too. It was particularly worrying to see that only a quarter of parents surveyed always cover up.

‘We want to help parents set an example so that their children have a healthy attitude towards the sun. Using a combination of shade, clothing and at least factor 15 sunscreen will help protect skin from harmful UV rays.’

To enjoy the sun safely, Cancer Research UK recommends taking shade when the sun is at its strongest (11am-3pm).  Ensure the little ones are wearing a hat, sunglasses and a t-shirt. And, most obviously, make sure to apply a high sunscreen to both your child and yourself.
