Don’t Cut Maternity Pay, Charity NCT Urges The Government

As the future of parental benefits remains uncertain, a leading group has emphasised the impact of financial strain on families

The parenting charity National Childbirth Trust (NCT) has written a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy Nick Clegg, asking them not to make any more cuts to maternity and paternity pay.

This comes on the back of news that the Government will be capping all benefits from 2015, apart from pensions, which has caused concern that maternity and paternity leave pay are at risk of being cut in the future.

Highlighting the strain that money worries can put on a couple’s relationship, especially after having a baby, the group suggests this financial pressure can contribute towards women developing postnatal depression and the whole family suffering.

‘The struggle to make ends meet may put strain on a couple's relationship and force parents back to work earlier than they planned,’ reads the letter from CEO Belinda Phipps.

‘Financial anxieties can increase the risk of postnatal depression for either parent and relationship breakdown. Both lead to poorer physical and mental health outcomes for all family members.’
