Summer Activities For Kids – Exploring Rock Pools

Wellies? Check. Net? Yep. Starfish pictures? Done. Time for a family rock pooling session

If you go down to the beach today… explore rock pools with your toddler.

They’re a brilliant place for him to discover sea creatures (SpongeBob fans will love…) and some National Trust venues hold rock-pooling sessions to steer you in the right direction.

Lizard Point and Kynance Cove in Cornwall puts on Wild Wednesday Beachcraft where a ranger introduces kids to the pools and organises other beach activities. In that particular area, try the low tide pools around Polpeor, Poldhu and Dollar Coves for anemone and starfish spotting.

If you’re rock pooling without a guide, be careful from a safety point of view – check out the tide times in advance and be conscious of slippery ground. Have a look at The Seashore Code beforehand.

Kit-wise, don’t forget Wellies or sturdy shoes, a small net, a plastic container to look at the animals, and ideally a guidebook to show you what you’re looking at. And when you’re done looking, make sure to put everything back where you found them.
