M&B Reviews: Gilpin Hotel and Lake House, Lake District

Gilpin Hotel and Lake House

If you want to try a staycation this year, we have reviewed a grown-up blowout hotel in the Lake District - save money on flights and have some well-deserved relaxation in the UK. This hotel is a break for parents away from babies and toddlers - no children under 7 allowed.

Claire Irvin, mum to Amelie, 5, and Charley, 2, stayed with husband Stuart at Gilpin Hotel and Lake House in The Lake District.

‘We welcome exhausted new parents all the time for a well-deserved recharge,’ says Barney Cunliffe, proprietor of Gilpin Hotel and Lake House. ‘They leave baby with their parents and spend the first few hours after arriving constantly checking their phones for baby updates. They eventually relax into their evening – only to do the same again at breakfast!’

“Many of the suites boast hot tubs from which you can enjoy stunning views”

The welcome at Gilpin is warm and personal. The beds are big enough to lose yourself in, as are the sumptuous baths. Many of the suites boast hot tubs from which you can enjoy stunning views. Then there’s the fabulous 3AA rosette restaurant serving local, organic food that celebrates traditional British flavours in a light, imaginative way.

And if your shattered new-mum legs will allow, there are miles of Lake District beauty to explore.

There’s plenty to keep you occupied at Gilpin, which recently opened the Lake House, a second site a short drive from the main hotel. Its 100 acre site has private gardens and grounds featuring a lake, summerhouse, kitchen gardens and walks leading to panoramic views of the Lake District mountains.

The Jetty Spa has a traditional sauna and indoor swimming pool that lead out onto the lakeshore and outdoor cedarwood hot tub. You can also take the option of indulging yourself with a spa treatment in the privacy of your room.

The long, languorous breakfasts watching ducks and geese frolicking on the lake are an unforgettable experience. Everything is mouth-wateringly excellent – I now judge all porridge against Gilpin’s ‘best-ever’ recipe. Afternoon tea taken in the lounge is also highly recommended as something to be lingered over.

“Gilpin’s five-course dinners are served in several different rooms, each as intimate and cosy as the next”

Pre-dinner drinks can be taken at The Lake House, on the pretty hotel terrace in warmer weather, or in the quirkily cool cocktail bar. Gilpin’s five-course dinners are served in several different rooms, each as intimate and cosy as the next. And if you’ve still got room for coffee and petit fours, sink into one of the soft, plump sofas in the drawing room and listen to the crackle of the fire.

As a country house hotel retreat, Gilpin Lodge is second to none. And as a grown-up break from the demands – yes, there are those among the delights – of parenting, its no-children-under-7 rule means that your stay won’t involve seeing other parents cooing over their own bundles of fun. We left not just relaxed and glowing but also energised – plus a little bit more loved up than when we arrived. And, yes, checking our phones to see how the little ones were getting on…

How Much? A stay at Gilpin Hotel and Lake House starts from £295 per night for a couple staying in a Classic Room on a half board basis midweek. The Jetty Spa Trail (3.5 hours) is exclusive to Lake House guests and costs from £300 per couple.
