The laid-back Italian spa for mums (and toddlers)

You can relax and take your little one with you at an Italian spa designed with children in mind

Writer Candy White stayed at Borgo Egnazia, Puglia, Italy, with Ruby, one.

'Going on holiday with only half my usual family gang, I thought I’d struck gold. My husband and three-year-old son were staying home, while I went on a girlie spa weekend with my tottering one-year-old daughter.

Despite its elegance, Borgo Egnazia is totally geared up for children and family fun

Her favourite game is to pull the contents of pretty much everything on to the floor and sure enough, upon arrival in the super-stylish reception, Ruby scattered the display baskets of nuts and spices all over the polished floor. Mortified, I couldn’t believe it when the staff just laughed. But, they reassured me, they’ve seen it all before.

Feeling relieved and a tad more relaxed, we headed to our room. I say room, it was more like an apartment, with an open plan living area, two en-suite bedrooms, a courtyard and
a huge roof terrace (which was safe
for Ruby to roam about on). A travel cot with a proper mattress and bedding had been set up, too.

Despite its elegance, Borgo Egnazia is totally geared up for children and family fun. There are three pools, bikes, trikes and go-karts to hire, as well as a fantastic outdoor play area, tennis court, two private beaches and a kids’ club for children aged eight months to 12 years.

It was the first time Ruby had been looked after by anyone other than family, but she happily wandered off. Without so much as a backwards glance, in fact. The staff are attentive, but don’t
overly fuss, and are quietly on hand
to provide you and your little ones with everything you need. Even
better, they don’t mind when the
kids wipe pasta sauce all over the cream linen tablecloths. But it’s the Vair Spa that’s the real gem here.

Tucked beneath the resort, and lit by flickering candles and oversized lanterns, it offers everything from physiotherapy to serious skin-sorting facials using treatments based on local ingredients. I had the Abbel Bel (translation: Oh So Slowly) facial, which used fresh almonds, rosemary, sage, mint, lemon and olive oil to
perk up my lacklustre looks. The
U Mor massage – an ultra-relaxing, seawater-based treatment inspired by the rhythmic movement of the sea – is seriously good, too.

The spa puts a big emphasis on connecting mind, body and spirit – and it worked. I felt totally blissed out, helped in no small part by the fact Ruby was having a whale of
a time in the kids’ club. There’s nothing quite like guilt-free bliss.’

Why you’ll love it

There’s lots for children of all ages, and the staff are welcoming and unflappable.
