Your youngster finds it harder to drop off to sleep when he’s not in his usual environment at home. But this little trick works wonders to help him settle. The bottom pat is a regular, rhythmic, gentle pat. If he’s a young baby, then pat his bottom as you cuddle him in your arms. Then, when you lay him in his cot on his back, continue the pat on his thigh. If he’s older and sleeps on his side, then pat his thigh in the cot from the start. Because your baby is focusing on the repetitive rhythm of the gentle patting, it will help him to switch off from all of the distractions in his new bedroom.
