What You Need To Know About Trying To Conceive (TTC) After Miscarriage

If you’re feeling ready to try to get pregnant after a miscarriage, we'll show you how to tell when your body, and emotions are ready

Whenever you feel ready to try to conceive again after a miscarriage, you may feel unsure about your chances of getting pregnant and how to cope with your emotions. We'll show you how to deal with your feelings and try again.

How miscarriage affects fertility

Having a single miscarriage shouldn’t have any effect on your chances of getting pregnant again.
‘It will be possible to conceive again and give birth to a healthy baby,’ says Dr Geetha Venkat, Director of Harley Street Fertility Clinic.
It’s important to see your doctor if you have any questions or concerns as you want to feel as positive and stress-free as possible when trying to conceive.  If you’ve had multiple miscarriages, your GP may start investigating in case there’s an underlying cause.

When it’s safe to try for a baby after miscarriage

If you feel you want to have sex again soon after a miscarriage, it is better to wait a few days to give yourself time to heal.
The lining of your womb will likely be tender, and can easily become infected. If there were no complications with your miscarriage, such as infection or prolonged heavy bleeding, it’s perfectly safe to have sex after a few days. As long as you feel ready.
‘You do not need to wait months following a miscarriage before trying to conceive again,’ says Dr Venkat. ‘There is no harm in trying again following your first normal period. Once you’ve begun ovulating, her body is back to normal physically and it is safe to try for another baby.’

Coping with your ‘what if’ emotions

Making the decision to try again often comes when you feel emotionally ready to move forward, but once you are trying to conceive again after a miscarriage it’s normal to start having ‘what if it happens again’ feelings.
It is important to stay positive and calm, and share your feelings with your partner, or friends and family. Shift your focus to all the great things you can do to TTC and stay well, such as upgrading your eating habits and discovering the best sex positions for conceiving.
