The loveable Shaun the Sheep has been voted the nation’s favourite BBC children’s TV character of the last 70 years.
In a poll conducted by Radio Times, which attracted more than 41,000 votes, our much beloved sheep beat Postman Pat and Sooty and Sweep to top the vote.
The poll featured shows from the 1950s to the present day and included favourites such as The Magic Roundabout, Paddington, Willo The Wisp, The Wombles, Teletubbies and In The Night Garden.
Richard Starzak, Shaun’s creator, says, ‘I’m chuffed, flattered and delighted, on behalf of everyone who has worked on Shaun the Sheep for this honour.

‘It’s amazing to think that Shaun will be part of so many people’s happy memories. I’m so grateful to the readers of the Radio Times for voting for Shaun. You’ve made me very happy!’
Shaun first made his appearance in Nick Park’s Academy-Award winning Wallace and Gromit film, A Close Shave. His dazzling performance earned him his very own series that began in 2007. Since then, Shaun has quickly risen to sheep stardom as one of the nation’s favourite TV characters.
Ben Preston, Editor of the Radio Times, says, ‘Every generation has a favourite which lingers for a lifetime. Our winner, Shaun the Sheep, will be remembered in 50 years' time, just as…Postman Pat and Sooty and Sweep remain hugely popular almost 60 years after they were first broadcast.
‘It's a testament to the enduring quality of British children's television that a contemporary character topped the poll in a shortlist filled with classic programmes from the last seven decades.’
Shaun is also set to make his film debut next year in ‘Shaun the Sheep Movie’, expected February 2015. The film will see Shaun, Bitzer and the flock embark on a rescue mission to save to the farmer from the clutches of the city in their biggest adventure yet. Let’s just hope Shaun can adjust to his new-found fame!
