The World Cup Is Almost Here. But Could It Influence Baby Names?

Section: Boys baby names

With the FIFA World Cup just days away, there could be a surge in the popularity of footballer-inspired baby names, especially if England do well

There’s no escaping World Cup fever, with the first football game kicking off on Thursday in Rio.

But now it seems parents-to-be may pick a baby name from the England World Cup squad, with twice as many children being named after Wayne Rooney or Steven Gerrard, according to family history website Ancestry.co.uk.

They looked back at previous birth records and discovered that when England last won the World Cup in 1966, there were an extra 8,500 Roberts born – perhaps taking inspiration from footballing legend Sir Bobby Charlton – as well as higher than average numbers of Alans (Alan Ball) and Geoffs (Geoff Hurst).

Given that in the last few years England have had a habit of crashing out in the quarter-finals (often on penalties), it may be the case that instead of lots of mini Waynes and Stevens, parents find inspiration from other teams and opt for Ronaldo or, erm, Xabi. OK, maybe not.

Whether you’ve become a football widow, or you’re embracing World Cup fever, you’ll love these cute football-inspired baby buys
