Forget Apple – the green superfood is the latest food that parents are calling their baby after
We reckon it all started when Gwyneth Paltrow decided to call her daughter Apple. At the time, people were more than a little surprised at her decision to name her baby after something that you enjoy snacking on and grows on trees.
But it seems raiding the fridge or kitchen cupboard is now the best way to get baby name inspiration.
A report by America’s Social Security Administration revealed that last year, 262 newborns were named Kale, of which 257 were boys and the rest girls.
Kale is a green cabbage-like vegetable that comes from the same variety of vegetables as broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts. It’s rich in vitamins B and C, and is one of the highest non-dairy sources of calcium. It’s regularly added to juices and smoothies to increase the nutritional content.
But enough about the health benefits – this desire for food-themed names seems to be catching on.
According to figures reported by food website, Bon Appetit, we’re also seeing names such as Olive, Pepper, Maple and even Chai (as in the tea).
All well and good, but just remember that picking vegetable-based names is no guarantee that your little one will want to tuck into them…
