There are lots of wonderful ways to celebrate at Easter, from egg hunts to crafts, and of course lots of chocolate!

A lovely craft idea that the whole family can get invovled with, whether young or old, is Easter egg decorating.

To make this even simpler, you can buy kits online with everything you need to create beautiful eggs to display in your home. So, here are our favourite Easter egg decorating ideas to inspire you, plus where you can buy the kits to get crafting.

10 Easter egg decorating ideas

Dye your eggs all the colours of the rainbow with this egg dye kit, complete with egg dyes, dipper and instructions. Different colours and patterns can be achieved depending on how long you dip your egg in the dye - you can also try dipping half in one colour and half in the other, or using string or a wax crayon to 'protect' certain areas from the ink.

After dying your eggs, or even on plain eggs, you can use colourful pens to create whatever designs you want on your eggs. These acrylic paint pens will make your designs vibrant, and the water-based ink is safe for children too.

These Easter animal decorations are perfect for some seasonal crafting. Your kids will love the cute characters too. There are plenty of stickers to use, plus feathers, pom poms and googly eyes. The best bit is any leftovers will be great for other crafts such as making Easter bonnets!

A sweet and pretty Easter activity craft kit which you can choose to make with either 6 matt white chicken sized craft or 9 wooden eggs ready. Decorate them with real natural pressed flowers. The kit includes your choice of eggs and a sheet of pressed natural flowers, 40ml PVA glue and a fine brush. The flowers themselves are delicate, so this is one more for the adults and older kids to try out. Using a pair of tweezers to pick them up is the easiest way to handle them. Your tots can still help out with the PVA - which we know they will love!

Gather around the table for arts and crafts and decorate your own egg decorations. Each kit comes with 6 pots of paint in red, yellow, blue, gold, pink and green. Use the included paint brushes to decorate 6 polystyrene eggs, then hang your new Easter decorations around the house, on an Easter tree or in the garden for your Easter Egg Hunt! A fun, creative indoor activity for kids whilst at home this Spring.

This pack comes with three polystyrene eggs with self adhesive templates, plastic pins to secure the sequins in place, ribbons for hanging and of course sequins - but you can always use the sequins on real eggs if you'd prefer, sticking them on with good old PVA. Let your kids create a sparkling masterpiece.

We love this Easter egg decorating tattoo kit, truly transforming your eggs into colourful works of art. Each kit contains 3 sheets, totalling 27 tattoos with 9 fabulous designs, featuring bunnies, carrots, flowers, birds and bees. Use these egg decorating tattoos to make your eggs look sensational - the kids will love this fun activity!

The kit includes 6 plain white eggs, water based acrylic paint, brush, sponge brush, Pva glue and 2 envelopes of assorted bio glitter (5g) plus tissue paper confetti to create fabulous Easter eggs. So there's lots off ways you can decorate your eggs.

If you want to give the eggs a more natural finish before decorating them, simply leave in a bowl with tea or coffee (no milk or sugar) for approx 30 mins and they will look too real to tell!

How to prepare eggs for decorating

There are two ways to prepare your eggs for decorating:

1. Hard-boiled eggs

  • Place the eggs in room temperature water.
  • Bring to a boil then turn down to a low boil for 12 minutes.
  • Remove from stove and let cool before decorating.
  • Refrigerate within 2 hours of cooking and use within a week.

2. Blown eggs:

  • Wash the eggs gently in warm, soapy water.
  • Use a strong needle or nail to pierce both ends (make one hole larger).
  • Poke a straightened paper clip or toothpick through the larger hole to pierce the yolk.
  • Hold the egg, larger hole down, over a bowl and then blow the contents out with a rubber ear syringe or small straw.
  • Rinse out the shell and dry thoroughly before decorating.
  • Use the egg contents for baking or scrambled eggs.
