Angelina Jolie and children

Angelina Jolie is a well-known actress, filmmaker and humanitarian but how much do you know about her children?

Angelina has six children in total: three sons and three daughters. Of the children, three were adopted internationally, while three are biological.

Maddox Chivan

After visiting Cambodia twice, while filming Lara Croft, Angelina returned to the country in November 2001 with her then-husband, actor Billy Bob Thornton. There they met Angelina’s first son Maddox, (born Rath Vibol) and applied to adopt him.

Although the couple announced the adoption together, Angelina adopted Maddox alone and raised him as a single parent following their break-up just three months later.

There was a slight delay in adoption proceedings when the U.S. government banned adoptions from Cambodia due to allegations of child trafficking. The little boy’s name was eventually changed to Maddox Chivan.

Maddox went onto attend University in South Korea.

Zahara Marley

Angelina’s second child, six-month-old Zahara Marley was adopted from an orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 6, 2005. Her birth name was Yemsrach.

When she travelled to Ethiopia to take custody of Zahara, Angelina was accompanied by her then partner, Brad Pitt.

Angelina then filed a petition to legally change her two children’s surname from Jolie to Jolie-Pitt, which was granted in 2006. Brad then officially adopted Maddox and Zahara soon after this.

Shiloh Nouvel

Brad and Angelina went on to have their first biological child in Nambia in an attempt to get away from public scrutiny.

Shiloh Nouvel was born on May 27, 2006 in Swakopmund. Angelina and Brad decided to sell the first photos of Shiloh through Getty Images with the aim of benefiting a charity with the funds.

Pax Thien

Three-year-old Pax Thien (born as Pham Quang Sang) was adopted by Angelina on March 15, 2007, from an orphanage in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He had been abandoned by his biological mother soon after birth.

Because Vietnam's adoption regulations do not allow unmarried couples to co-adopt, Angelina adopted Pax alone. However, following Brad and Angelina's return to the USA, she petitioned the court to change her Pax’s surname to Jolie-Pitt. This was approved on May 31 and Brad then went on to adopt Pax officially on February 21, 2008.

Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline

Angelina confirmed that she was pregnant with twins while at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2008. Just two months later, she gave birth to a son, Knox Léon, and a daughter, Vivienne Marcheline, on July 12, 2008.

In a similar story to Shiloh, the first pictures of Knox and Vivienne were jointly sold to People and Hello! for a reported $14 million, with all the proceeds donated to the Jolie-Pitt Foundation.

Over the course of their 12 years together, Angelina had a heavily publicised relationship with Brad.

Although they did not publicly comment on the nature of their relationship until January 2006, Angelina was involved in a Hollywood scandal when she was accused of having caused the divorce of Brad and his then-wife, Jennifer Aniston in October 2005.

The couple announced their engagement in April 2012. They went on to marry on August 23 2014, at their estate Château Miraval in France.

Sadly after two years of marriage, the couple separated on September 15, 2016. On September 19, Angelina filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.
