M&B Reviews: The Cornish Break

Section: Holidays

Enjoy the cream teas and culture of St Ives from this relaxed, coastal hotel

Marketing Consultant Samantha Bell visited Tregenna Castle in St Ives, Cornwall, with her friend Sonia.

Four years ago, before children, my husband and I stayed at Tregenna and, when we left after a week-long break, I promised myself (Arnie style) that I’d be back. I don’t know what took me so long.

Perched high on the cliff overlooking St Ives and Porthminster beach, Tregenna Castle hotel is the place for spectacular sea views and sunrises. The hotel’s height means the walk into St Ives is either a 10-minute (very) steep descent through the gardens or a 20-minute downhill stroll along the road – the latter’s preferable with buggy.

And it’s so worth it – St Ives is a bustling, friendly town famed for its artists, galleries, cream teas, beachside cafes and delicious local seafood. Plus, the beaches are huge and child friendly.

The hotel itself is a bit tired in the communal areas and doesn’t have WiFi or a reliable mobile connection. Frustrating maybe, but it does give a feeling of being cocooned from the rat race. The kids’ facilities suit all ages and include a pool, large outdoor play area, tennis courts, gardens and games rooms – plus, plenty of highchairs and a children’s area in the dining room. Meanwhile, the food is tasty rather than fancy, and the child menu is varied and healthy.

We stayed in a sea view twin room in the main hotel (there are also self-catered cottages and apartments in the grounds) where the highlight was the incredible view. And all baby and child paraphernalia can be hired.

Our week was spent pottering around St Ives, eating lots of delicious food and enjoying spa treatments at the hotel (try the Thalgo Facial – heaven). It’s the perfect place to come with family, and the friendly staff really make it feel like a home away from home. I’ll definitely be back again with the children and husband – just need to decide if I let on about the lack of WiFi before we get there…

Fresh air and a relaxed break, whether you’re with kids or friends.

Great children’s facilities and food – plus safe beaches to play on.
