The Hollywood actress announced her split with the Coldplay singer on her website Goop after 10 years of marriage
They were a notoriously private couple, never appearing on red carpets together or discussing their relationship in interviews, but actress Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, chose her lifestyle website to announce her split with husband Chris Martin, 37.
The split appears to be quite amicable, and it’s clear they’re putting parenting their two children, Apple, nine, and Moses, seven, first.
Writing on her website, Goop.com, in a post entitled “Conscious Uncoupling”, Gwyneth said, ‘It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.
‘We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time.
‘We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.’
Speaking in an interview for a movie a few years ago, Gwyneth admitted ‘It's not easy being married for 10 years. We definitely have our ups and downs,’
The couple first met in 2003 and married a year later, but always made sure they sheltered both their relationship and their children from the public eye.
The couple are currently on holiday together in the Bahamas with their children, perhaps a sign that they’re keen to keep things as normal as possible for Apple and Moses.
Sources say Chris even bought Gwyneth a special gift to mark the new stage in their lives; a painting of a bird in flight by Mila Fürstová.
Like fellow celeb couple Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr, who split up at the end of last year, the couple still see themselves as a family and plan to co-parent.
