Best supermarket for cardigans

Whilst Asda has a great offering for colours and styles of cardigans, we've chosen Morrisons as our top pick for cardigans based on the comfort factor. Available in red, cobalt, navy, and green, these cardigans have fitted cuffs, V-necks, and are made of 82 per cent cotton for softness. The colour is guaranteed to stay for up to 50 washes so they'll be able to survive that wash and wear every week.

Several styles also come with ‘Grow With Me Hems’; trousers specially designed with extra length in the hems to be let down over the school year, to grow alongside children. Alongside this, Teflon Eco Elite stain repellent technology will help release the toughest of stains.

Tesco also offers a 100-day guarantee across all uniform items, including shoes, so that parents can be confident and have peace of mind that if their child wears out their uniform quicker than they’d like, it can easily be exchanged or returned.

Designed to be as durable as they are smart, their skirts are stain and weatherproof, crease resistant, and come with added stretch for perfect fit and comfort throughout the school day.

  • From £6 for single, £10 for 2pk

Review for the Girls' Embroided School Skirt"I have bought several of these skirts over the years for my (now 8 year old) daughter. They wash up extremely well and iron well and even after much wear, they get handed down looking as good as new. I’ve tried slightly cheaper supermarket brands, but it’s false economy as the material is thinner and they look scruffy after a few months."

Best supermarket for sensory-kind uniform

Earlier this year, Asda  became the first major retailer to create a range of uniform that helps make school life more comfortable for those children with sensory-sensitive needs.

Their new Easy On Easy Wear range which caters to all children, including those who have sensory-sensitive needs like autism, has been highly praised by thousands of shoppers and mums who struggle to find uniform for their little ones.

You can find out more about the full range here, but we've picked out the Girls' White Long Sleeve Easy On Shirt. This long sleeve shirt features soft threads for extra comfort, a printed care label and pull on cuffs with mock-button detailing. The mock buttons continue down the length of the shirt with an easy fastening hook and loop tape instead to make for easy, independent dressing.

Mum Lisa said: "Thank you thank you thank you. Today my daughter managed to get herself dressed for the first time. The easy on shirts has been a game changer for us."

Best supermarket for sportswear

Tesco's Back to School range also features great quality PE kit essentials, starting from as little as £2, including 100 per cent responsibly sourced cotton sweatshirts, joggers and t-shirts, quick-dry netball skirts and football shorts, as well as other sporting staples.

As well as quick dry clothes, they offer cotton rich options to prevent irritation with movement, and their coloured clothes are designed to keep their colour for longer.

  • Only available in store
  • Sizes 3-16 years
  • Regular sizing available
  • Prices from £2 including £2 for 2pk

What about Aldi and Lidl?

Both Aldi and Lidl offer school uniforms at very low costs – Aldi’s shirts start from as little as £0.90, and you can even get a whole school uniform from Lidl for just £4.50!

While they’re a great place to shop if you’re working with a tight budget, both Lidl and Aldi have limited Back to School ranges in comparison to the other supermarkets and so getting your hands on their affordable uniforms is a little tricky as they sell out fast.

The uniforms have surprisingly good quality for the price, however, they don’t have many of the features available from other supermarkets including easy-iron or non-iron materials, colour-stay technology, and adjustable hems and waistbands. For that reason, we’re not sure how well they will stand the test of time, but if you’re looking for a quick uniform buy at the lowest price, both supermarkets are a great pick to be ready for Back to School.

You can shop Aldi's clothing here, and Lidl's Back to School range here with sizes ranging from 4-12 years.

Which is the best supermarket for school uniforms?

In our opinion, if you're looking for a one-stop shop for all your Back to School needs, we'd have to recommend M&S and Asda.

M&S offers great quality and a great range of clothes that are inclusive in their sizing and awareness of skin sensitivity, and are designed to be both comfortable and last longer.

However, if you're looking for clothing that is a little more affordable and you don't mind potentially having to buy new bits further down the line, we'd recommend Asda for having a fantastic range of colours, easy-dressing options, and school uniforms at amazing value.

Can I get help with school uniform costs?

You can check on Gov.uk if your local council provides school uniform grants that help with the cost of school uniform and PE kit, and if your council doesn't offer help, you can ask your child's school directly. To check, simply enter your postcode and you'll be taken to your local council's information page to see if the option is available to you.
