baby sleep aids

Certain factors can contribute to creating the perfect sleep environment for your baby and if your little one has trouble drifting off to sleep, baby sleep aids such as the best cot mobiles can help. There are lot of things parents can try which include baby massage, moisturisers and bath soaks, or white noise machines.

For many of us, getting to sleep is all about creating the right atmosphere. Fresh sheets, a hot drink, lights off, the perfect pillow… these can all help when trying to achieve the magic eight hours of sleep. Your baby is pretty similar, and they might need you to make their own little bedtime environment, such as a soothing white noise machine, to create a relaxing atmosphere or light projector for calming lighting. Sleep aids can also help when trying to settle your baby in a new place, either while on holiday or staying at a relatives, for example, using baby sleep sprays for familiar calming smells to help them settle at night.

As a new parent trying to navigate baby sleep you might want to try a few things to find the best routine or product for you and your little one. Babies are individuals and what works for one, might not for another.

Items like baby sleep toys that play lullabies, a sleeping bag, so they feel cosy and safe, or a room thermometer to make sure the temperature is just right will also help to aid your baby's sleep. If a baby sleep aid sounds like something both you and your bundle of joy could benefit from, we've rounded up the best ones below.

A few days in, and we were pumping lullabies and white noise into his ears at every opportunity in a bid to get him to drift off. Best rechargeable baby sleep aid

Description

With a soft-glow nightlight, intelligent CrySensor and six soothing sounds and lullabies, the adorable Tommee Tippee Ollie The Owl is more than just a cute and cuddly companion. It comes with a fabric loop so you can easily attach it to the outside of your baby's cot, car seat or pushchair.

One review said: "This has honestly been a little lifesaver, and I attribute my son's good night sleeps to this thing. In short, the cry sensor works quite well. When he wakes up in the night, it'll blast some white noise/lullabies until he passes out again. It has a good selection of sounds (White noise static, a river, heartbeat, and 3 lullabies). 3 Levels of light that can be used, and 3 volume levels. We find the max volume to be far too loud to be blasting next to a baby's head, so we keep it on 2 or 1, depending on noise levels outside. Soft material, well made, easy to recharge. Can't fault it honestly. Used this since he was 6 months old, and he's now 2 1/2 and still continues to sleep through the night with this."

Pros

  • Adjustable volume and brightness controls
  • Automatic shut-off after 20 mins for sound and 30 mins for light

Cons

  • Some reviewers wished the CrySensor was a bit more sensitive

Good variety of sounds and a nice design. Light can be turned on or off during use. Comes with a circle hook so it can be hung up out of the way. Would recommend for any parent whose toddler struggles to settle."

Best 3-in-1 sleep aid

The 20-minute auto-off timer also means you don't need to worry about getting up to turn off the mobile and waking up your little one in the process. You can display a magical starry night on the walls using the projector function, helping create a soothing and relaxing atmosphere come bedtime. Once your baby gets a little older, feel free to detach the cute animals from the mobile and develop your baby's skills as they play.

Review: "My daughter loves it, and three months down the line, she still loves it. The lights are great at night."

Pros

  • Convertible mobile, table and cot light
  • Wake-up mode stimulates daylight
  • 6 melodies and 4 nature sounds

Cons

  • Some reviews mentioned it didn't fit their cot - so double-check measurements first

Best cot clip baby sleep aid

Description

Available in blue, pink and grey, this Chicco Next2Stars night light has three different light effects to fill your bubba's room. It will automatically detect if your baby is crying and reactivates the night lights and music to help them fall back asleep again.

One review said: "My mum bought this for me for my new baby, and I never knew that it had a baby cry sensor in because once he cried when I was out the room, and I ran in to see the music and lights on, I knew it wasn't on when I left, but then it happened again another time, and I realised it's a baby cry sensor. I think it preserves enough power also for that when needed. It's bright, music is loud if needed, good volume control, and I love the songs, very cute. Goes with my blue cot. The only downside is it runs out so quickly, luckily, I have rechargeable batteries, otherwise, it would cost a fortune."

Pros

  • Lots of different musical genres to choose from
  • Changes colour

Cons

  • Some reviewers mentioned the batteries ran out quickly

Best Smartphone app intergrated baby sleep aid

Description

The Momcozy White Noise Machine can be adjusted remotely via a Smartphone, so you can adjust it as needed without waking your little one. It comes complete with 10 white noise sounds, three fan sounds, seven lullabies and 14 nature sounds and seven colour light settings so you can create the perfect environment for your sleeping baby.

One review said: "Finally caved after using my phone to play white noise and brought this sound machine. It was easy to set up (wait for it to charge a bit before). The app is easy enough to get your head around, and I was shocked that there were so many different sounds, lighting options, brightening options. It really is a great option. I would say battery life is roughly 2 nights, and that is with both sound and light playing. My little boy sleeps through the night, but it was a mission to get him to nap longer than an hour that wasn't restless. This helps amazingly, and he is now napping 2+ hours again at a time! Highly recommend!"

Pros

  • Can be controlled by physical buttons or Smartphone app
  • Auto-off timer
  • Wide variety of sound choices

Cons

  • App requires Smartphone

Baby Sleep Aids - All you need to know

Tips on how to get your little one to go to sleep

Making sure your little one gets all the sleep they need is often much easier said than done.

If you're having trouble getting your baby to have some shut-eye, we've got some sleep advice that will help you through the newborn stage and beyond.

Set a sleep routine: creating a baby sleep routine can be helpful for your little one and for you. It can help your baby to relax, and they will eventually pick up on their bedtime cues. This could be giving your baby a relaxing bath followed by a baby massage.

Let them self-settle: once you've fed and rocked your baby, it's usually the case that when you lay them down, they wake up. By having a mobile over the cot or light projector, you can stay with your baby and let them coo over the relaxing atmosphere, which can help them to self-settle.

Recognise their sleep cues: there are little tell signs that your baby is tired such as yawning frequently or staring into space. If you start settling them for sleep when these signs first show, your baby won't become overtired.

Create a good sleep environment: baby sleep aids are a great way of creating a great sleep environment. Blackout curtains can also help, making the room dark, so your baby doesn't think it's daytime.

Will an overtired baby eventually fall asleep on their own?

Once babies become overtired, they might actually find it harder to get to sleep, and to stay asleep. Of course, life is busy and it can't always revolve around your little one's sleep routine, but where possible spotting your baby's cues that they are ready for sleep will help them fall asleep easier. However, sleep aids will help too, for example, a warm bath is comforting, especially with a calming fragrance like lavender, for an overtired baby. Similarly, nightlights and projectors, or lullabies all create a sleep inducing atmosphere.

Are baby sleep aids safe?

Before choosing any sleep aid for your baby, you must think about safety. The Lullaby Trust advises that a clear cot is a safer cot as babies are at higher risk of SID if they have their heads covered, stating, "it is safest to keep baby's cot clear of any items such as bumpers, toys and loose bedding." With this in mind, a sleep aid shouldn't go in the cot with your baby, and because of this, you'll find that most sleep aids are designed to sit or hang on furniture instead.

Whether you're pregnant or have already welcomed your new baby into the world, you know you need a lot of stuff. The Amazon Baby Wishlist is the best way to keep track of everything you need for your baby - and it's easy to set up.
