Quite possibly the single most important item in your make-up arsenal, nothing opens your eyes, makes you look wide-awake and defines quite like a great mascara. We’ve chosen the best mascaras for their ability to give great lashes in one or two coats, never clump and stay put through thick and thin.
Benefit They’re Real (£19.50, benefitcosmetics.co.uk)
It’s little wonder this is the UK’s best selling mascara. It gives lashes of dreams in one stroke and the bouncy rubber bristles comb and separate lashes perfectly. There is even a ‘ball’ of bristles on the end of the wand to catch lashes at the corners. Plus it stays put all day. A must buy.
This delivers ridiculously long, super black lashes in one coat. But stick to one coat only – it can start to clump if you try to build it up, but it’s brilliant for busy mums who want to apply and go. Try not to ‘pump’ the wand into the tube, as you will push air inside and the formula will dry out much more quickly.
Maybelline Great Lash (£4.99, boots.com)
A real cult buy, fans of this green and pink tube can't be parted with this iconic mascara. It delivers easy lashes in our opinion - one coat is great for everyday, and you can even opt for the Brownish Black shade if you're very fair and want to subtly define your eyes.
There's nothing worse than a mascara that volumises, but leaves lashes dry and brittle. That's why we love this one. A couple of coats maximises lashes, but leaves them soft and flexible. We love pretty much every Lancome mascara, but this is our favourite for volume as well as looking after lash condition.
YSL Baby Doll Mascara (£24.50, yslbeauty.co.uk)
This chunky rubber wand has a slight angle on the brush, with spaced out bristles on one side (to coat and volumise) and finer, closer spaced bristles on the other side (to grab every tiny lash). Gives pretty, long lashes, with a slightly more natural effect than some mascaras, but can be built up easily with extra coats.
L’oreal Paris Volume Million Lashes Excess Noir (£10.99, boots.com)
Fast, affordable and never fails to create amazing lashes in one coat. We love this new addition to the Volume Million range for giving seriously thick, dark, dramatic results.
Rimmel Scandaleyes Lycra Flex (£6.99, boots.com)
The extra fat brush builds volume, while the Lycra technology keeps lashes soft and flexible. If you like a huge brush, big lashes, but more fluttery and natural, this is the one for you.
Clinique High Impact Extreme Volume (£17, clinique.co.uk)
The rubber bristles and slightly tapered wand gives long, separated lashes fast. It doesn't smudge or run, but removes easily at the end of the day.
Max Factor Clump Defy (£10.99, superdrug.com)
Creates amazing, long and thick lashes instantly and can be easily built up without clumping or going spidery. The formula lasts and lasts too, which is a big bonus.
Revlon Lash Potion mascara (£9.99, boots.com)
The triple-groove wand extends lashes, whilst combing through for a fast, clump-free effect. But the best bit is that overtime the strengthening formula actually treats and helps lashes grow stronger over time.
