This year is all about getting the 'I've just been to the spa, dahhhhling' glow. Highlighters are in and matte finishes are out. Ten step(!) skincare routines are being championed, whilst getting the remnants of your make up off with a wipe is no longer allowed (sigh).
During the The Glow era, there have been a lot of whispers about Microdermabarasion. But what actually is it, does it work? Will it make your skin really red and blotchy? Is it just a waste of money?
I went to the really fancy Blush + Blow salon in South West London, to see what all the fuss is about...
Firstly, what is Microdermabrasion?
It's a deep exfoliation of the skin using tiny crystals to physically remove the top later of dry skinc cells, to reveal healthier-looking skin. It doesn't involve chemicals and it's non-invasive. The facial encourages the production of collagen and elastin, to help improve your skin's appearance and help combat aging.
During the treatment, I was told to close my eyes as what felt like a tiny vacuum was slowly glided over my face. Afterwards, serum and mosturiser was massaged into both my face and neck.
Does Microdermabrasion hurt?
No it doesn't. It felt slightly uncomfortable at times, but I grew to find the sensation relaxing after a while...
Can you have Microdermabrasion when you're pregnant?
While microdermabrasion exfoliates your skin physically rather than the worrisome chemical peel, they are still not considered safe to use during pregnancy. The increased sensitivity of the skin alone during pregnancy can lead to irritation, breakouts and uneven results.
How much does it cost?
Microdermabrasion well set you back at around £60. Quite pricey for a deep exfoliation, but it definitely felt worth it.
Does Microdermabrasion work?
My skin felt red afterwards (which I was told is completely norma!l), but after a few days I really noticed a real difference with the look and feel of my skin. Before, my skin would be prone to blotchiness and enlarged pores, but after the treatment my skin looks a lot clearer with a nice overall texture. Holly Willoughby, eat your heart out!
It didn't get rid of my acne scars on my chin, but however, it definitely helped the overall appearance of my skin.
