The do's and don'ts to help relieve constipation

Constipation is a particularly common problem, though some are more likely to suffer than others.

1) Drink more water

Chronic dehydration can cause constipation, so it is important to stay hydrated. Make sure you drink plenty of fluid such as water, diluted squash or fruit juice and be careful with sugary fizzy drinks, which may contain more sugar than you need. 

2) Exercise more

Turns out, exercise can really help constipation. If you're not a fan of going to the gym, don't worry as there are many other ways to get your daily dose of exercise. Why not go to the park for a kick about or indulge in a park walk? All you need is a regular activity you enjoy to help things moving again.

4) Fill up with fibre 

Try adding fibre-rich food to every meal. You should aim on average to get 30g of fibre in your daily diet and can do this by eating foods such as oats, seeds, fruits, vegetables and wholegrain pasta. However, make sure you increase the amount of fibre gradually into your diet, as a sudden increase can cause flatulence and/or bloating. 


5) Get your toilets habits right

Try to stick to a toilet routine and go at the same time and place every day.  Try not to give in to the urges to go out of this time and respond to your bowel's natural pattern.
