How to have a mindful pregnancy this Christmas

Christmas is almost here, which means a diary full of festive get-togethers with family and friends. But while it’s great fun to do so much celebrating, there’s less time to think about your bump.

Which is why now is the perfect time to learn mindfulness techniques, as they will help you connect with your growing baby, even when you’re racing to parties, wrapping presents and cooking Christmas lunch. Try this technique to focus on what’s really important this Christmas.

Mindful Walking

If you find yourself thinking about a million different things at once, shift your thoughts to the here and now by going out for a walk. It doesn’t have to be far or fast, but the actual act of walking can help still your mind so you feel present in the moment.

As you set off, think about how your feet feel as you move. Focus on the pressure on the balls of your feet, the feel of your socks and shoes against your skin and the sensation of your muscles lifting and tensing. Then think about how your baby responds to your movement. Is he moving about more or less than usual?

To help you tune in to what your baby is doing, place your hands on your bump as you walk. Take notice of the sounds, the feeling of the air on your skin and the different sights. Describe these to your baby, just in your head if you like. If your mind drifts to how long the turkey will need in the oven, gently steer your thoughts back to your bump and how you are feeling in the moment.

Do this for just five minutes and you’ll return feeling peaceful and bonded with your baby.
