  • 2018 Shortlisted Best Rear Facing Car Seat
Mother & Baby 2018 Shortlist

At a glance:

With various adjustable reclining positions, the Nuna REBL Plus is a long-lasting car seat that can be adapted with your baby as they grow. Our panel of mum testers loved the 360-degree swivel seat – a handy design that makes getting your baby in and out of the car much easier. It’s not the cheapest on the market and can be quite heavy and bulky to move between cars.

What they say:

“Impeccably tailored, strong, smart and exceeding the i-size safety standard, the new REBL plus 360° car seat with seriously secure enhancements, cleverly converts so that your little one can ride safer for longer rear facing allowing you can relax and enjoy the journey from birth all the way up to four years old (40-105cm).”

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would definitely recommend this product to a friend as Nuna have really thought about the features that make mums’ lives easier. These are the 360-swivel feature, the adjustable seat positions and the spare covers, all which make a difference to our lives! The car seat feels really sturdy and safe and my little one loved being in it. At first, I thought it was quite expensive but when you consider it's the only car seat solution you need until your baby is four-years-old it's actually really good value. The price also includes the Isofix base.

How did this product make your life easier?

I love the 360-degree swivel, which makes getting your baby in and out of the car much more straightforward. I also really liked that you could easily change how upright the seat was by using the seven settings available. As it is a handy button at the front of the car seat, I found I could even press it from the front seat which was really useful if my son fell asleep during the journey. As the product can be used from newborn up to four years, it also means you don't have to worry about changing car seats and I loved the fact it came with a spare cover, perfect for when one is in the wash.

Would you choose this product to win?

I would because I liked the design. The seat was higher than my regular car seat and my son loved being able to look out of the window and see people sitting next to him more clearly. It also felt much sturdier and looked more comfortable. The choice of being able to rear face or front face when your child is older is really useful, so for me, the 360-degree swivel feature really stood out. However, I would only choose this from six months plus, as with a newborn, I personally prefer something which is compatible with a travel system and can be moved in and out of the car.

What changes would you make to this product?

This is a great car seat with lots of useful features but it doesn't offer much flexibility. The car seat isn't compatible with any travel systems and it can't be removed from the Isofix base – this makes moving it to another car tricky.

Tested by mum Kelly Vidler for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend the Nuna car seat to fellow mums because of the amazing swivel function and also because it fit nicely into my small car (a Peugeot 108) with the front seat pulled forwards. My daughter also seemed to be comfortable in the seat, which kept her happy during our journeys.

How did this product make your life easier?

The 360-degree swivel function definitely improved our lives, as it helped me to get my little girl in and out of the car so much easier. Otherwise, it seemed like quite a regular car seat to me, not much else stood out.

Would you choose this product to win?

I wouldn't choose this product above others on the market because it is more expensive than others that have similar functions. Also, I didn’t like the positioning of my baby in the seat - she was too upright, even when fully reclined, and this made it difficult to get her in the seat and also meant she ended up in a chin to chest position if she fell asleep. I also didn't like how the Isofix wobbled from side to side, despite all the indicators showing it was installed correctly.

What changes would you make to this product?

If I had to pick one thing, I would say the recline function needs to be deeper for little ones – the seat doesn't seem to suit smaller babies very well.

Tested by mum Maria Webb for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend this product to another mum because of the comfort it provides for my child. The seat is wide, meaning that it leaves room for baby to grow and will most likely last until my child is four-years-old. The design is clean and the seat is comfortable, with soft padding on both the sides, back and bottom area. The seat is easy to wipe clean too.

How did this product make your life easier?

This product fits into the car with no hassle. The Isofix clicks straight in and has adjustable buttons for different height settings. The 360 rotation is the best thing about this seat – it has helped me to get a screaming toddler secure in the seat, without having to lean around and fight to make sure they are safe. This has also done wonders for my back because all it takes is a touch of a button and the seat is facing you. The seven recline positions reassure any mother that their child is sleeping comfortably, safe and protected.

Would you choose this product to win?

I would choose this seat above other market competitors. I have seen that other brands use an additional axis fix as well as Isofix, which makes the fit more complicated, whereas this car seat is so simple! It also has higher weight restrictions and therefore will last longer at better value.

What changes would you make to this product?

The clip on the seat belt is so easy to open that my toddler can do it himself at 23-months-old – this makes me feel uneasy and should be changed.

Tested by mum Thokozani Brown for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

Both the design and comfort of this car seat are the key reasons I would recommend it to friends. The price of the car seat would not appeal to a parent on lower income, and so I wouldn’t recommend this to everyone. The future proof design makes this car seat very appealing though, it’s so lightweight.

How did this product make your life easier?

The swivel function on the product was extremely handy when I had to put my child in and out of the car seat. Other car seats I have experienced do not have this function, so it used to be very difficult to manoeuvre the child in and out, hurting my back. We did experience some slight rattling sounds when installing the seat, this could be fixed!

Would you choose this product to win?

I have very limited experience with all size car seats and so don’t feel I can choose this product over all others on the market. But I do think this product had a sleek design and was nice and lightweight, considering the age ranges the seat caters for.

What changes would you make to this product?

The one thing that I would change about the product is its headrest – I felt that it was not supportive enough as my child's head would move around in the car whilst in motion.

Tested by mum Charlie Young for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend this product to fellow mums based on how easy it is to use. The 360-degree function was excellent and the seven different settings made little one so comfortable! It was also easy to install and the instructions were simple to follow with helpful illustrations.

How did this product make your life easier?

This product made my life easier as my child loved it – there were no tears, he looked very comfortable and slept for most of the journey too! This meant that for me the journey was stress free and enjoyable. The car seat also has different ankle settings, which I could see being very useful as the child gets bigger.

Would you choose this product to win?

I do not think it should win as this product has recently failed the ADAC tests horribly and is now a Which Don't Buy. I would pay a lot of money to ensure my baby is safe on every car journey, but only if it was the best product, with no faults.

What changes would you make to this product?

I think this product is great from a practical point of view, however from a safety point of you, I am not so convinced.

Tested by mum Alexandra Goodall for the M&B Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

Yes I would recommend the Nuna Rebl Car Seat to my friends and other mums as it's easy to fit in the car due to its simple design (no need to attach parts before fitting). It also has great design features like the ability to turn the seat and recline the seat to enhance the comfort of my baby. It was sturdy and secure looking but not cumbersome.

How did this product make your life easier?

This product did make my life easier when it came to getting my baby in and out the car, due to its swivel seat I was able to turn my baby towards me to get him in and out the seat without overstretching and straining getting him in and out the seat at an angle. Also because of its simple design and easy to follow instructions I was able to fit the car seat in my car without help.

Would you choose this product to win?

It easy to transport and is comfortable for baby and for me in terms of getting him in and out the car. Being able to turn the seat was the one feature that most appealed to me in terms of making this seat more appealing than other car seats on the market.

What changes would you make to this product?

If I had to highlight one thing that could improve this product it would be to make it easier to adjust the strap length of the seat when fitting baby in.

Tested by mum Angela Thomas for the M&B Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would definitely recommend the Nuna Rebl Car Seatto anyone, it's easy to fit into the car didn't even have to use the instructions. The newborn insert is really easy to fit in again didn't have to use the instructions, loved the fact it came with an additional seat cover so you don't have to worry about when to wash the original if it gets dirty. My child found it really comfortable and looked well supported when he fell asleep, was also easy to adjust the head setting and easy to recline if he fell asleep.

How did this product make your life easier?

This product makes things a lot easier just by being able to swivel the seat 360 degrees, it helps when putting the child in if you've had to park in a tight spot with not much room to open the doors. Also having a spare seat cover is a bit advantage when on the go as it comes off really easy and not having to hurry to get it dry before putting it back on. I think the biggest advantage for this seat is the swivel, found it so much easier getting my child in and out without any fuss of twisting my back.

Would you choose this product to win?

The swivel action is amazing and I wonder why it has never been thought of before. Although it's at the higher end of the price range I think it's worth spending the money on a seat that is going to last and not have to be replaced.

Tested by mum Lucy Sims for the M&B Awards 2017:

The 360 degree swivel function allows you to easily strap in and remove your child from the seat without having to reach over or stretch. The moving parts of the seat are easy to find and operate. I have used the car seat for both my 6 month old baby and 2 year old and have found the Nuna Rebl is easily changeable to accommodate different children, the head rest moves with the click of a button and the harness straps are tightened with a single pull. The footrest when forward facing is a good feature for older children. The car seat looks simple and stylish.

How did this product make your life easier?

The spare seat cover is an added bonus, with two children accidents are bound to happen and having a spare seat cover is a real helping hand. The 360 degree swivel function is the best feature of this car seat. With the inset for babies, this is the only car seat you will need from birth to 4 years. The isofix fixings make it easy to fit in the car and ensure a safe secure fit.

What changes would you make to this product?

There isn't much difference between the reclining levels on the Nuna Rebl. I found that most reclined position on the car seat was still fairly upright so when my 2 year old fell asleep her head was dropping forward. The car seat is quite heavy and bulky which makes it moving between cars a bit of a struggle.

Tested by mum Angela Thomas for the M&B Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would highly recommend the Nuna Rebl Car Seat to other mums as it is very practical and helped me lots. Once the base is affixed to the isofix fixtures in the car and the seat is attached on there is no need to take it out again. The best feature for me was the swivel function. the car seat is very well made and sturdy. It is very comfortable and safe; it is bulky and heavy but once in the car this doesn't matter and it didn't put me off - better than being flimsy!

How did this product make your life easier?

I have a 3 door car and therefore getting in and out of the back with a baby can be difficult, especially if the weather is bad. The swivel function was fantastic and saved me squeezing in the back of my little car with baby. I can't imagine not having one now.

Would you choose this product to win?

There are some really good car seats out there nowadays but In my opinion this is by far the best that I have used. It makes life so much easier and it is not such a chore getting baby in and out of car. The newborn insert is very cosy for the baby and the head/neck is supported well at all times. The car seat is solid once attached on to the base and feels very safe.

What changes would you make to this product?

If I had to change something I would possibly make the base and seat slightly lighter and maybe not quite as bulky. This did not put me off the carseat though as once it is fitted in the car it doesn't matter how heavy it is. The back of my car is quite small but still plenty of room for my two ther children next to this car seat.

Tested by mum Charlotte Schoolar for the M&B Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would definitely recommend this car seat to other mums. Although it is rather heavy and bulky once in the car it was very easy to use. The Nuna Rebl is very easy to fit in the car with indicators to show when in the correct position. It is also very easy to sit child in correctly and securely. As the Nuna turns 360 degrees it is very easy to get child or baby out without a struggle.

How did this product make your life easier?

Having never used isofix at all before having a car seat in the car ready to go at all times makes life so much easier. Also having previously only used a belted car seat the Nuna although bulky felt very safe and secure once installed, which is great for peace of mind. As I said before the 360 turn helps to get child out with the greatest of ease.

Would you choose this product to win?

The car seat itself is of very high quality and very well made. My only concerns were the stiffness of the straps which would lessen over repeated use. That being said I felt my daughter was very safe and secure in this car seat and I found it very easy to use.

What changes would you make to this product?

The only downside to the Nuna for me was the fact the baby insert and the straps were very stiff and unforgiving. I would imagine that these would give over time and repeated use but at times it felt a bit restrictive for the child whilst getting in the seat and getting out, although once in they felt very secure. Another point would be that recline function although very easy to use just didn't quite tilt back enough for my little one but only by a very small margin.

Tested by Aisling Alsopp, 28, mum to Monty, four months. She says:

“It’s small and compact, leaving plenty of legroom for everyone else. It’s slim, so an adult could fit in the middle of the back seat between two car seats. The insert for babies is bulky though, Monty was squished with it in place, but unsupported without it.”

>> WHAT IS AN ISOFIX CAR SEAT?

Tested by Laura Allen, 36, mum to Riley, 15 months. She says:

“Easy to install, but I wasn’t sure it was correctly positioned as the light indicator only went green when the seat wasn’t in the car! The rotating feature works well, and the spare chair cover is a great idea. However, Riley’s head kept rolling forwards.”

Tested by Dawn Geddes, 35, mum to Beth, three years. She says:

“Attractive and easy to install and Beth seemed safe, comfy and secure in it. The rotating feature is a real advantage when getting your child in and out of the car, and is ideal for toddlers.”
