At a glance:

This affordable manual breast pump is a great choice if you’re looking to express discretely at work. It comes with a handy stand to stop the expressed milk spilling when you’ve finished pumping, and it’s soft on your breasts compared to other manual pumps. That said, our panel of mum testers had mixed reviews when it came to suction strength.

What they say:

“The Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump has adjustable two phase technology - the Let Down Phase gives rapid suction to stimulate and initiate milk flow and the Expression Phase gives lower, deeper suction to maximise milk flow. The unique ComfortSeal cushion of the Manual Breast Pump from Lansinoh creates a secure seal for more comfortable and efficient pumping. The breast pump's ergonomic handle and lightweight, compact design allow for easy one-handed use and discreet portability. The Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump is silent, easy to assemble, easy to use, easy to clean and is dishwasher safe. For extra value, the manual breast pump comes with two extra valves and a spare silicone diaphragm, as well as two storage bottles, bottle rings and specially designed sealing disks to prevent leaking.”

Would you recommend this to other mums?

Yes, definitely! It is comfortable, easy to use and effective. The adjustable pump strength was a little tricky to understand at first, and the instructions weren't very clear, but once I had worked it out though the results were amazing. The bottle fits straight onto the pump and can be stored in the fridge until needed. It is simple to attach the teat and feed baby and it saves a lot of washing up and sterilising.

How did this product make your life easier?

I always thought all breast pumps were the same, however after using this one I realise how rubbish all my other ones were! The pump mechanism is smooth and quiet. It doesn't take a lot of effort to get it working and you don't get a sore hand from pumping too long. It is very efficient and I was able to get a lot of milk in a small period of time This could have been down to the adjustable suction and the 'let down' phase. The stand is also invaluable and meant I could secure the bottle and pump while I finished feeding my baby without the risk of knocking it over and wasting all my hard work (which has happened with other pumps).

Would you choose this product to win?

I have used several manual breast pumps and this is by far my favourite. Mainly because it is so easy to use and doesn't require a lot of effort. I often spilt milk with other pumps while trying to juggle a wriggly newborn, but the bottle stand has stopped this. The only thing missing that I prefer with other brands is the inclusion of milk bags to store expressed milk. As a first time mum, I was reluctant to buy bags until I was sure expressing and freezing milk was something I wanted to continue. By adding a few bags in, a new mum could have everything they need for the first few weeks. I do like the information included with the instructions regarding the storing of breastmilk – it is convenient to have it all written down rather than searching for it.

What changes would you make to this product?

The packaging advertises 'on-the-go' use. Although it is very quiet and discreet, a travel bag or box would be easier to ensure the pump stays clean when using it away from home. The instructions could be a little clearer, perhaps with diagrams, to better explain the adjustable suction.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend this product above others as it is lightweight and therefore more portable than the other manual pumps I've used. It is very well designed and easy, quick pumping is possible, anywhere, anytime. I managed to pump with no mess at all, which was a first for a manual pump! This is another high quality Lansinoh product!

How did this product make your life easier?

If a manual breast pump is what you're after, this product will hit the spot – it’s very easy to use and well made. Manual pumping requires patience, but this pump met my expectations and provided enough milk for a feed, although it took me 45 minutes, I think that's a reasonable amount of time for a manual pump!

Would you choose this product to win?

I would choose this product over any of the other manual breast pumps I've used because it is so much easier to transport than others. I was able to pump enough milk for a decent feed in less time than it has taken me with other manual pumps. I think it should win because of its design and practicality compared to other manual pumps on the market.

What changes would you make to this product?

I think this is a great product and doesn't require much change at all. If pushed, I would say that the manufacturer could provide a spare bottle as that would help those of us with large milk supplies! Otherwise I have no other criticisms except perhaps the price. It feels a little expensive for what it is.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

The pump is much cheaper than electric pumps. It is extremely easy to use, easy to put together and take apart, and the instructions are very easy to follow. As a first time mum, I was wary of a manual pump as I wasn't sure what the results would be and didn't want to spend half an hour trying to express. However, after ten mins I had achieved the same result as I would normally with an electric pump. It's easy to transport due to the size and is not big, bulky or heavy so can easily be taken in a pram bag if required.

How did this product make your life easier?

The breast pump is very quick and simple to put together which also makes taking it apart clean and straightforward, there's no 'faffing' about. The 'let-down' function is very good, allowing quicker pumping with slightly less suction to get milk flow started and is then easily switched for proper pumping with greater suction. It's quiet, meaning it can be easily used during the night if required which is a bonus!

Would you choose this product to win?

Having never tried any other manual pumps, it would be difficult to compare it directly, however, I do have a multitude of other Lansinoh products and on this basis, I would choose this product. That said, when comparing the price against other manual pumps it does seem to be higher in a comparison to other trusted brands who manufacture pumps.

What changes would you make to this product?

The price seems quite high compared to other manual pumps on the internet from trusted brands - if this was cheaper it would be my first choice.

Tested by mum Sophie Budd for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I don't know about women with smaller boobs, but I don’t think this is a good product for women with bigger boobs. It is hard to hold a manual pump, whilst keeping it in place and maintaining the suction whilst pumping. It also makes your hand ache after pumping for an amount of time and makes expressing feel like hard work compared to other pumping machines I have used.

How did this product make your life easier?

It doesn't make my life easier as I can't get milk out with this manual breast pump. I have larger sized breasts and they doesn't get the suction needed. That being said, it may not be this product specifically as I haven't been able to produce milk out with any manual pumps - I normally use an electric breast pump.

Would you choose this product to win?

I wouldn't choose this product on the market as manual pumps for people with bigger boobs are really hard work and if expressing is hard work I never do it. I use an electric pump normally as can get a small bottle in ten mins. It is not so much just this manual breast pump, as I have used manual ones before which also have not worked on me.

What changes would you make to this product?

A larger head on the product for larger breasts would be beneficial as I have never managed with a manual pump and potentially it could be that it needs to be able to create and maintain more suction around the nipple to be able to get the amount of milk needed.

Tested by mum Atlanta Williams-Harrison for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend this product to a mum or friend as I love the durability. Not only that, but I found it very easy to put together and take apart. You can take it around with you to travel too. In terms of storage, it does not take up too much space and I love that it is steriliser safe.

How did this product make your life easier?

It makes my life easier as I do not have to sit down and breast feed – I am able to go out and have a pre-prepared bottle of milk to give my child. Using it also allows me to take time out of my day for myself as well as helping provide for my child. I think it improves my flow as I am able to latch my child onto my breast and when she's not drinking I can express.

Would you choose this product to win?

In terms of manual breast pumps, I would choose this one. I have never tried a manual pump other than this one and I'm glad I was given a chance to give it a try. I do think this product should win as it provides comfort and ease. Personally, I do prefer electronic breast pumps as I feel it stimulates the nipple more and is quicker.

What changes would you make to this product?

It would be very handy if it included more storage bags that are for freezing especially, or another bottle to express into would be convenient.

Would you recommend the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump to other mums?

I would recommend this breast pump as it is extremely simple to assemble and use. I had never tried a manual pump before but it was easy to put together and worked incredibly well, extracting milk almost as quickly as an electric pump. I like the fact that it is silent too as electric pumps are very noisy.

How did this product make your life easier?

I'm going to a wedding next weekend and leaving my baby with my parents. I'll need to express while I'm there to avoid mastitis so I'll take this pump with me and as it is silent I can discreetly pump in the toilets when I feel the need to. I can also use it beforehand to express milk to leave with my parents.

Would you choose this product to win?

It is so simple and user friendly and extremely effective at extracting milk. It feels like it has the fewest parts possible which is a good thing, and it is all quite large and easy to clean. It doesn't take much effort to express, I thought my hands might get tired but they don't.

What changes would you make to this product?

A simpler way to switch between let down and continuous phase would be good, however I'm not sure how this could be made easier! Perhaps a carry case for taking it out of the home, a manual breast pump is something many mums take to occasions like weddings and it would be good to have something to put it in, inside your handbag.

Tested by mum Vikki Hind for the Mother & Baby Awards 2017:

Would you recommend the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump to other mums?

I love this breast pump. It is easy to put together and take apart for cleaning. The let down mode is great feature which speeds the process of expressing up as you get a let down quicker than other pumps I have used. I also like the satisfying audible sound as the milk drips into the bottle. The stand is very sturdy and keeps the pump upright when not in use and prevents it from being accidentally knocked over.

How did this product make your life easier?

The Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump helps me as a mum because it is so quick and easy to use which means I can get on with my day quicker after a pumping session. It's easy to clean and put together too which helps when you've just had a baby. The pump itself is small which means it is easy to transport and use on the go if needed.

Would you choose this product to win?

The let down feature for me helps the product to stand out against other manual breast pumps and the price is fairly decent too. I also like how small and compact it is compared to other pumps which don't come apart as much as the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump.

What changes would you make to this product?

The Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump is an all-round great product but one thing I would like to see added is a cap to go across the funnel when not in use or in between pumping as I am quite often disturbed in the middle of a session. A handy travel bag for on the go would also be a good addition to this breast pump.

Tested by mum Lucinda Kay for the Mother & Baby Awards 2017:

Would you recommend the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump to other mums?

I would recommend the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump to other mums because I found it worked really well when I was pumping, I got more breast milk from the breast with this pump than I did from others I have used and I also didn't have to pump for as long because it was so efficient. The pump was really comfortable to use as well.

How did this product make your life easier?

I loved how the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump had two phases to it, I found this made my life easier because when I used it properly it encouraged let down faster so therefore I had to spend less time pumping. The pumps handle is a good shape to use which makes it really comfortable when expressing. The pump was really easy to clean too. It’s amazing value for money.

Would you choose this product to win?

It's a really good affordable price for mums but works just as well, if not better than more expensive pumps I have used in the past. The breast pump came apart really easily too so would be brilliant to travel with and it felt very sturdy. This Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump is small but powerful.

What changes would you make to this product?

If I could change one thing about the Lansinoh Manual Breast Pump it would be the assembling instructions. I didn't find the instructions clear enough and had to guess at some points how to put the top of the pump together. Once I had got the hang of it it was quite simple and I could do it quickly but it felt like a guessing game at the start.
