Mother & Baby 2018 Shortlist

At a glance:

The Swing Maxi Breast Pump provides the iconic Medela swing technology in a double pump. The massage function is lovely and the pump is pretty portable and lightweight for a double pump. There’s no on screen or digital display, meaning you’ll have to get old-school and time how long you’ve been expressing for.

What they say:

“The Medela Swing maxi combines the quality of the Medela Swing with a more powerful motor as it is made for double pumping. Compared to single pumping, double pumping can cut expression time in half and remove 18% more milk. Unlike a single pump, Medela Swing maxi pumps simultaneously from both breasts and allows you to express more milk with higher energy content. Medela Swing maxi has a very simple design and is extremely portable. It is easy to assemble and disassemble for cleaning, and all parts can be sterilised in a microwave for convenience.”

Would you recommend this to other mums?

If you are expressing on a regular basis and need to save time, I would highly recommend the Medela Swing Maxi Double Breast Pump. The two-phase expression pump technology mimics a baby’s natural rhythm on the breast and allowed me to express more milk than a manual pump in a quarter of the time!  Despite there being many components to the pump, the instructions are easy to follow and with only four buttons, very easy to use. It is a very attractive design – small, light and compact. The reputation and popularity of Medela pumps gives you piece of mind that it is a good quality product.

How did this product make your life easier?

On a regular basis, this pump will save you a great deal of time as opposed to a manual breast pump. It is also small and compact - making it easy to transport. The bottles that fit the pump fit both Medela’s Calma teats and other teats, making the whole system very convenient to use. You shouldn’t have to buy any other brands of bottle, unless your baby doesn’t take to the Calma teat or Medela’s other teats in the range.

Would you choose this product to win?

I would choose this product over others as Medela pumps have a good reputation and popularity which gives a mum piece of mind that they have a quality product. It’s attractive, light, small and compact. It’s comfortable and easy to use and can save you a great deal of valuable time. My only concern is the price as it is very expensive for what it is, but perhaps that’s the investment into a name you can trust!

What changes would you make to this product?

For the price, the Swing Maxi Double Pump should be sold with the Medela Easy Expression Bustier, as it can be very fiddly trying to hold both pumps and juggle a baby and toddler. It can also be quite noisy, which is fine at home or in hospital, but I can imagine in some work places it could be a bit awkward and difficult to remain discrete. I also feel that this might be a product aimed towards mothers who go back into the work place, so an attractive carry case could be a convenient addition.

Tested by mum Jenni Moss for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend this to a friend as I think it is a really good pump. I think its size is great as it means you can fly with it as it's light and portable and the fact that you can use batteries also means you can use the pump anywhere which is great. The massage function means it stimulates let down and the pump is not painful to use.

How did this product make your life easier?

This pump works really well to enable me to express breastmilk for when I am away from my baby. In addition, the Medela teats are the first teat my little boy would actually take above two other leading bottles on the market. The pack contains everything you need to express milk except the storage bags.

Would you choose this product to win?

I think I would choose this pump above others on the market if I had to pump full time to replace feeds for my baby while at work, or if I had a pre-term baby. Due to the cost I think buying this pump is an investment and you would need to want to use it a lot. I found the pump portable, easy to use, effective and I thought the bottle teats which came with the pump were great.

What changes would you make to this product?

I think the fact that this pump is an open system pump is not ideal as it means there is a risk that milk could enter the system and get mouldy. It also means others should not use your pump, and that you shouldn't sell or buy this product second hand. I think for the price this is something which should be remedied.

Tested by mum Jennifer McKillop for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend this product to other mums because the product is so useable! In the house, the product plugs straight in to a socket, and when out and about the pump can be used with batteries - meaning you don't need to search for a socket. I would also recommend other breastfeeding mums to get this product as it makes it so much quicker and easier to express a bottle of milk for your baby!

How did this product make your life easier?

This product has made my life easier by giving me more freedom! I can now pump a five ounce bottle in 15/20 minutes, therefore if I ever need to leave the baby with my partner to go out alone or with friends it's not a big deal. I no longer feel confined or unable to do things spontaneously. I can now also give my partner bottles of my milk to give our son during the nights if I need a good night’s sleep.

Would you choose this product to win?

I think this product should win, I would choose it over similar ones on the market because it is very reasonably priced in comparison to similar breast pumps. The product is also very practical as it can be used both indoors and out! Finally, the product feels sturdy and very good quality.

What changes would you make to this product?

If I could change one thing about the product it would be for it to be made so that it did not need to be held in place while in use. I would change it so that it could be used hands-free without having to make an additional purchase of the breast pump bra, as this would make the product more useable than it already is.

Tested by mum Cherith Montgomery-Fleming for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

It is very comfortable to use, very mobile and can also be very discreet if the compatible bra is used, for example I was able to express milk today just sitting in the car. This pump would without a doubt speed expressing up in the most comfortable way. I would definitely recommend the dual pump to my fellow Mums.

How did this product make your life easier?

The pump is super quick and efficient to use because of the dual pump but also the overall design and different settings that kick in for milk flow. I am able to drain both sides comfortably within five minutes which is brilliant – with previous pumps I wouldn't be able to actually express unless my baby was suckling on the other side.

Would you choose this product to win?

Yes. This pump has different settings and one perfectly mimics by baby's suckle which literally just makes my milk flow and is very comfortable. I would recommend this pump over the other brands I have tried.

What changes would you make to this product?

The only thing I would change about the pump is - when I lift the pumps off your breasts I tend to have a little spillage of milk dribbling down and onto my clothes. If there was a slight lip on the edge of the two pumps that might prevent the spillage which would just perfect the item 100% for me.

Tested by mum Beccy Miller for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

Usually, I can’t sing Medela’s praises high enough and already owning the Medela Swing, I had high hopes for the Maxi version, thinking it would make the experience of pumping much easier but in actual fact, it made it harder! I have very large breasts and it was difficult to try and comfortably place both pumps on and then operate it, without it coming loose. I think if I was recommending it to a smaller breasted friend, it might be easier, but I am still not completely sure how. The fact it can be transported with battery power rather than mains does make it easy to take out and about though, but once you have the hosing, flange, bottle and power back together, it isn’t really a compact device to take out and in fact, I recently took it out with me and would say my hand pump is easier and smaller to transport.

How did this product make your life easier?

When you actually get it to pump at the same time then it’s really efficient at expressing the milk – it does it in half the time needed if you pump both breasts. It’s handy that you can also express directly into a bottle that you can feed from and it also washes really easily. The original Swing had tiny little white discs which always got lost, so the new design on that is much easier.

Would you choose this product to win?

Having used this product, unless I was exclusively expressing for the duration of my baby’s first few months I wouldn’t choose it over the singular swing as I don’t think it suited my particular breast size and was quite cumbersome. However, I would always choose Medela as an electric breast pump brand over others, having used a few with my previous baby before settling on a Medela.

What changes would you make to this product?

I think for the market price and bearing in mind it is more expensive than the original swing, they should include the hosing to allow you to express one breast at a time so you have the option. You couldn’t do this unless you sealed over one end of the hosing. I know you can buy this separately, but it would be nice to include it.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would (and have!) recommend this product to fellow mothers as it is portable, lightweight and aesthetically pleasing with no compromise to its effectiveness! I found it quiet enough and the fact it is portable and allows for hands free pumping is a huge bonus for multitasking mums! Perhaps most importantly I was astonished how straight forward it was to use and how effective the 2 phase expression technology was! I'd expressed more than before and in a shorter time!

How did this product make your life easier?

The portable double pump and hands-free function frees up precious time for busy multitasking mums! I was astonished how efficient the Medela Swing Maxi Breast Pump is - I was able to produce milk so quickly with the effective 2 phase expression technology. I may not still be breastfeeding if it wasn't for this product. I was so encouraged when the pump allowed me to express my first precious ounce in the early days and it has since helped me express off my engorged boobs and provided relief for my sore nipples. Now it allows me to build a store of milk for my growing baby.

Would you choose this product to win?

The Medela Swing Maxi Breast Pump would be my first choice of electric breast pump as this respected and reputable brand takes you through every stage of breastfeeding! I initially used this product whilst I was still in hospital where it helped me to encourage milk production, subsequently I have used it to relieve engorgement, when I have experienced severe pain breastfeeding and more recently whilst introducing bottles to my baby. I am also confident this product will take us efficiently and effectively through our next stage of feeding as we express more regularly and in greater volumes.

What changes would you make to this product?

As a relatively expensive product I feel there could be a few additional accessories included in the box. I understand that similar products from other brands include everything you need to get going! As such perhaps the inclusions of a few samples of the microwave bags and milk storage bags would not only allow you to sterilise and use the product without any aditional purchases but may also encourage the user to continue to buy the Medele range in these once they've had to opportunity to try them. Similarly for the price it'd be useful if the bustier for double pumping was included as a gesture of acknowledgment of the investment made by the customer.

Tested by mum Emily Massey for the Mother & Baby Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I love the design and comfort. For a double pump it’s so easy to use. It’s incredibly durable - I have dropped it on a few occasions and you wouldn't know! It’s so easy to transport I took it on holiday with me and it was very easy. It's so easy to clean with minimal parts contacting breast milk this reasures me that its hygienic.

How did this product make your life easier?

This product comes with a teat for the bottle. It means both breasts can be pumped, one stored for later and one can be used there and then with the teat. This is the only bottle and teat my son takes as it represents the breast. It's so reassuring that both breasts can be pumped before going out for the day and it doesn't take hours!

Would you choose this product to win?

I never thought or considered a double pump but this pump is a life saver. I don't feel confident feeding in public, this has saved me so much time expressing both breasts just before leaving and then expressing both once home to take the fullness away. Would also be perfect if you had multiple babies, or if you were expressing full time.

What changes would you make to this product?

I think this product should come with some sort of band or bra to wear as you have to hold both cups to the breast, this makes it difficult to change settings and also means you're a little stuck whilst you express! Good job it is such an effiecient breast pump that it doesn't matter too much though!

Tested by mum Sarah Wells for the Mother & Baby Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

Really easy product to use, instructions (with colour pictures) very simple to follow. Can be used as a single or double pump meaning that it can be adaptable to various situations. The pump can be used plugged in or with batteries which means that you can use it out and about, however, it's not small, so whilst it will fit in a changing bag, it’s unlikely to be suitable for around town in a handbag or clutch! The varying suction types and speeds means it is adaptable to your own needs.

How did this product make your life easier?

This is a really adaptable breast pump, it can be used as a single or double which means that you can really save time when pumping. The power source can be via either a plug or battery operated allowing mums to easily express at home or whilst out and about. The pump comes with everything needed to get you started and its really easy to get set up, so after cleaning and sterilising its a question of pressing the button, sitting back and relaxing while expressing!

Would you choose this product to win?

It's small enough to store away without taking up lots of space. It also comes with the calma teat to replicate breast feeding and prevent nipple confusion - this is a great addition to enable someone else to help with feeding (especially during those long nights!).

What changes would you make to this product?

Whilst not significantly distracting, the pump is slightly noisy, especially if put on a hard surface. It would also be nice if it came with additional sized breast shields - this can be purchased separately but for the cost, it would be good for them to be included to allow a mum to set up and go! However, neither of these points undermine the fact that this is a fantastic product.

Would you recommend this product to a friend/fellow mum?

This pump is brilliant and performs almost like an industrial pump would. Can be used as a single pump but I used it as a double and filled two bottles at a time nice and quick and easy. The calma teat was new to me but I would recommend it as it makes baby work hard at getting the milk out like they would with the breast and so doesn't effect if you carry on using the breast. The pump looks lovely and feels comfortable when in use. It's easy to clean and the instructions are straight forward so would be suitable to those new to pumping.

How does this product make your life easier as a mum?

I can get milk supplies in double the time, which is priceless for a new mom and I can also form a stockpile of milk, great for if we are away, baby sitters or if I'm on medication for instance.

If you could change one thing about this product what would it be?

Possibly lower the price but it's so fantastic that people would pay full price and still be over the moon with it.

Tested by mum Katy Orr for the Mother & Baby Awards 2016:

Would you recommend this product to a friend/fellow mum?

This pump is well-designed, easy to use, and very effective.  The control panel is ergonomic and instructions are simple to follow.  I particularly like the automatic switch from the initial 'let down' mode to the slower 'emptying' mode.  The pump is comfortable and efficient at milk collection and although it appears complicated to assemble initially, with practice it is easy to put together.

How does this product make your life easier as a mum?

This double pump is quick and easy to use and means I can cope a little easier with my new life as a mum of twins.

If you could change one thing about this product what would it be?

Unfortunately this pump is considerably more expensive than others on the market.  I feel it is definitely a more superior pump than others I have tested. The teat provided delivers a very slow flow of milk to my babies, I think this could change to aid mums.

Tested by mum Louise Parr for the Mother & Baby Awards 2016:

Would you recommend this product to a friend/fellow mum?

I was initially put off by this pump as it reminded me of the expressing machines used in hospitals by the color and design. However, I found this product easy to assemble and use. It was also comfortable to use and I was able to express a good amount of milk.

How does this product make your life easier as a mum?

I found that I was able to express quickly using the controls to adjust the pumping speed. The pump was quick to assemble and had simple instructions to follow.

If you could change one thing about this product what would it be?

I would change the colour as the yellow colour reminded me of the hospital express machines which I had to do for 8 days.

Tested by mum Sally for the Mother & Baby Awards 2016:

Would you recommend this product to a friend/fellow mum?

Comfortable, practical and has increased flow two fold... Amazing!  I would highly recommend this double pump to all mums wishing to express.  The double cups are comfortable and have great suction. The pump is easy to clean and you can sterilise simply.  The controls are easy to use, and the flow options worked really well to obtain a steady flow.  The pump is easy to transport and the lead to plug in is extra-long so that you can express somewhere comfortable rather than close to the wall and plug socket.

How does this product make your life easier as a mum?

I love how much time I saved using this pump.  With increase to my milk production even after the second use, I spent a lot less time worrying about not having enough milk for my baby.  I also saved time in the pumping process as I could express both sides at the same time.  Cleaning and sterilising was so easy it also took less time.

If you could change one thing about this product what would it be?

I would only change the price of this pump. Although I believe it is one of the best, perhaps a lower cost would help new mums.
