Mother & Baby 2018 Shortlist

At a glance:

This highchair has a super-large tray, which is great if you’re baby-led weaning. The reclining seat looks and feels really comfy, and is a great feature if your tot falls asleep mid meal! However, the large frame and design are not for everyone.

What they say:

“This Pink Butterflies highchair designed with Katie Piper features three recline positions and 6 different height settings. The highchair's extra padded seat means your little one is super comfy for feeding time and the easy clean tray makes clearing up easier. The stylish design and bold colour of this pink highchair makes this beautiful highchair fun and a fashion statement for any home. Suitable from six months.”

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I think this product has some excellent features not seen in some more expensive highchairs. The adjustable height and removable tray are my favourite features. The highchair also reclines, and has a large tray with removable food plate, and while at first I thought this would be very hard to clean, the way it just pops out enables you to wash it in the sink, which is great. The highchair really has so many great features I could go on and on listing them!

How did the product make your life easier?

The fact that my daughter is in a secure harness gives me a lot reassurance as a parent. I have been able to sit my daughter in the kitchen with some toys on her highchair tray while I cook dinner safe in the knowledge she is comfortable. The highchair folds up and stands on its own, so can easily slot behind a door or be tidied away in another room when it isn’t being used.

This really is a super product. It has so many features, which make it excellent value for money. The adjustable height is the key feature. It just makes the highchair so versatile and useable. For safety, there is obviously the harness and the stop between their legs, and then when they are old enough this can be removed and replaced with a blanking plate. No doubt this highchair is a winner!

What changes would you make to the product?

The only thing I would change would be the material of the padded cushion liner. Although it is an excellent material to keep the highchair clean, I just think for the half of the year when baby is in vests and shorts the plastic nature of the cushion will make my daughter very hot and sweaty. Maybe a more cotton like wipeable liner would be something to look at. Other than that, I have no complaints; it’s a super product.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

The highchair is really attractive to look at, and unlike other highchairs I have used; my baby can sit very comfortably in it, which is great. It also offers lots of support, and has a lovely big tray with a compartment that enables you to put the food into specific areas. It is really comfy for my baby, and when the tray is removed, would also continue to be a really useful toddler chair for her to eat at the table in.

How did this product make your life easier?

This highchair is so comfy that I can put my baby into it quite happily, and she will sit while I clean the kitchen or cook dinner. My baby does not like being strapped into things, so this is a big deal! It is super comfy, and is a lovely chair that I have been able to use for my two-year-old too, though more as a chair to push up against the table without the tray. And, because it is height adjustable, I can adjust it to the height of my table perfectly. She loved it!

Had I not tried the highchair, I may well have picked it above others on the market, and even now, after I have tried it, I don’t think I would. Unfortunately, the leg holes are not quite big enough, and as such, I struggle to get my daughter in and out of the chair with the tray in place, meaning I have to remove the tray each time I put my daughter into it, which then means I have to be super careful when re applying the tray while she is in the highchair so I don’t trap her hands or fingers. Also, the inner tray is very easily removed, so easy, in fact, that my baby picked it up during one mealtime and hit my husband around the head with it! It was fully clicked into place, but she then proceeded to do it then next two times that we used it, so we had to stop putting it in, which is a shame.

What changes would you make to this product?

I would make the inner tray fit into the hole properly so that a baby can’t pick it up and wield it like a weapon. Also, it should be able to go into the dishwasher on the top rack. I would also make the gap bigger so that I can easily get my baby in and out of the chair without removing the whole tray each time. That, and the harness could do without being quite so fiddly.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend this highchair for mums going down the baby-led weaning route, due to the extra-large tray table it offers. Less food found its way to the floor as a result! Aside from this, I would find it hard to be an advocate due to its inability to offer an aesthetically pleasing design to keep Mums happy! I am a lover of interior design, and I’ll be honest, I really did not like this highchair when I first saw it, and if I was browsing in a store, it wouldn’t have made it home with me, as I would have opted for others which looked more stylish. One of the helpful features is its ability to recline the seat, so on the rare occasion that my daughter fell asleep after food, I could tip the seat and leave her snoozing whilst tidying and even sneaking a cup of tea! She is 14-months-old now, and she doesn't look crammed in.

How did this product make your life easier?

The super-sized tray table made my life easier through the weaning process, as we opted to go with baby-led weaning. The size of the tray table meant less food made it to the floor and as a result, my daughter was able to feed herself as opposed to everything always dropping away. The reclining seat was also helpful for occasions where snoozing became unavoidable immediately after food, though it would have been better if it had taken up less floor space.

Would you choose this product to win?

Unfortunately, I don't think we tested the winner! I would not choose this highchair above others on the market. The ‘pros’ I would call out for this highchair are the reclining seat and the super large tray, but other than that, I find it hard to ‘love’ this highchair, albeit my little one doesn't appear to have a problem with it. The ‘cons’ I can't get past are the large frame, and the unappealing design.

What changes would you make to this product?

The highchair is modeled on a basic A-frame design, and although I had set the height of the seat at its highest, the frame still occupied a lot of floor space. By this, I mean the front and back bars on the floor have a significant depth, so when the highchair is at the table, it could make squeezing behind it quite tricky. When this highchair is folded it still takes up a significant amount of space, so if space is a challenge for you, this highchair is not the best.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

If someone were looking for this type of highchair, I would recommend it. The colours and design were lovely, the seat appeared to be comfy, and there was the all-important bar between the legs that stops baby slipping down, especially when they are younger. A lot of the cheaper high chairs on the market don't have this feature. The chair was easy to build and the instructions were easy to follow. It is, however, quite bulky, even when folded, and takes up quite a lot of room. I also found cleaning the seat cover could be problematic with food getting into some areas.

How did this product make your life easier?

I liked the fact that the product had different height settings, so can be adjusted depending on the height of the table you are sitting at. We liked that there was a removable tray on the top, which made it easier to clean, but also meant that once the meal was finished and if the tray was dirty, you could just remove the top part and use the one underneath if they were having something else to eat, rather than making them wait whilst you clean it.

Would you choose this product to win?

No. I think it is quite expensive for what it is. It’s very bulky and takes up quite a lot of room, and the seat covers are hard to clean, with food sometimes getting into all the edges and creases of the seat. There are much simpler seats on the market that have similar features, at a fraction of the price. However, if someone is willing to spend the extra money and is looking for a nice design, lovely colours and a design that is safe for their baby to use, then you can't go wrong with this one

What changes would you make to this product?

I would change the seat cover so that it was removable and washable in the washing machine. I would also provide the chair with two seat covers, or an option to buy another, so that you can wash one and use the other. Ease of being able to clean the product is very important when feeding a baby that is likely to get food everywhere.

This is a great looking highchair with a bold flower design and a really comfortable and easy to clean seat. It is foldable for storing, and free standing when folded. The seat is sturdy and has several height positions, so is really convenient for whatever seat or stool you may be sitting in to feed baby.

How did this product make your life easier?

This product not only makes meal times comfortable and fun for my baby, but easy for me too! The seat is easy to clean, making the inevitable clean up from baby led weaning a breeze. The seat is also lovely and soft for baby. The fact that the tray has a removable insert is great as well, as food can be placed directly in the various compartments without the need for a plate or bowl. Brilliant!

Would you choose this product to win?

I would choose this product over all other soft-seated high chairs on the market because it is great value for money, easy to use and clean, and can be adjusted to suit both my baby’s needs and mine. It looks good too. It's particularly helpful for baby led weaning, as it is easy to clean and has a removable insert for the tray that has compartments for different foods.

What changes would you make to this product?

The seat isn't particularly wide. This wasn’t a problem for my baby girl, but might be a bit of a tight squeeze for a much larger baby or a toddler. Also, the distance between the leg separation post and the back of the chair isn’t too big. This again may render the chair unsuitable for an older child, which would be a shame.
