Mother & Baby 2018 Shortlist

At a glance:

We love the Grobag as much today as we did when it was invented, and our panel of mum testers did too. Giving the ultimate peace of mind and removing the worry of using blankets, stand out features include the portable thermometer included with your Grobag, helping you work out how to dress your baby each night depending on the temperature – genius!

What they say:

“When the Grobag was created in 2000 it started a baby sleep revolution. Today the Grobag is hugely popular with parents worldwide, and it isn’t hard to see why: it’s a baby sleep bag that helps babies sleep comfortably and safely through the night, meaning the whole family gets some much deserved shut-eye.”

Tested by mum Claire Stannard for the Mother & Baby Awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would happily recommend this product to other mums, and have already! They come in a good range of really lovely designs and in so many different sizes. There's definitely something for everyone! It's already made my life easier by not having to worry about blankets, and I know that friends would have the same worries. They're really easy to use, easy to wash and overall, really good quality items. With all that in mind, I'd definitely recommend to others.

How did the product make your life easier?

Firstly, the little guide that comes with the product is a lifesaver for knowing how to dress your baby according to the temperature (something I'd be clueless about otherwise). The Grobag means that I don't have to try and keep tucking a blanket in around the moses basket - no mean feat when you have a light sleeper! It enables me to put him to bed with peace of mind that he'll be warm enough and without the worry that he may slip down under the covers. That alone makes this product worth it for me.

Would you choose this product to win?

I really do love this product and think it's excellent in all areas - lovely designs, well made, washes well etc. However, they aren't cheap at around £20-£25 each. If you needed to have a couple (to allow for washing) in each tog rating, and again in each size, it would cost you several hundred pounds! Many supermarkets and shops do their own version, though the quality isn't as good and you don't get the little extras such as the temperature guide. I'd certainly choose the Grobag over similar products given the choice, but with price makes it much harder to call.

What changes would you make to the product?

Literally the only thing I'm not so keen on is the price tag. To be fair, it’s so well made that I can see how it justifies it, but as a mum, you'd need so many different sizes and tog ratings, it would cost far more than I'd be able to spend. Maybe a bundle pack might be a good idea - where you get a pack of three different tog ratings for a discounted price, or similar, may make it more affordable for mums.

Tested by mum Annie Shears for the Mother & Baby Awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

We all worry about our baby and their health and safety. What I love about the Grobag is that it’s warm enough to be able to replace any need for blankets, giving me peace of mind that my baby is both warm and safe. The soft fabric is very easy to fold and hang on a hanger. There is also a popper over the top of the zip, to stop my little one from undoing them, however, the popper is very easy to undo, so doesn’t always stop my child when she really wants to play with it. With the material of the Grobag being cotton, it is easy to wash and comes out just like new each time.

How did this product make your life easier?

The zip on the side and the poppers over the shoulders make it much easier to change my baby at nighttime, without having to pull anything over her head. This helps to keep her calm and doesn't wake her up too much, meaning she’ll fall back to sleep a lot easier and quicker, which we all love!

Would you choose this product to win?

I would choose this product above others on the market as it gives me peace of mind, being very, very safe, and keeps my child warm whilst still allowing her arms to be free.

What changes would you make to this product?

I would change the design to allow for more neutral, calm colours, as well as changing the popper to stop my child from accessing the zip, as it is easier to open than the zip itself. I would also offer a carry bag to keep the it fresh and stop it from being exposed to all of the dirt and germs that I wouldn't want my child to be sleeping in, should I have to take it out with me.

Tested my mum Chloe Sherwood for the Mother & Baby Awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

Not only do you have a choice of thickness of your Grobag, but they all also come with a portable thermometer that has a guide on the back to help you know how to dress your baby with each thickness, depending on the temperature. It is also a very easy product to wash, and folds up nice and small, which is perfect for travelling with.

How did this product make your life easier?

The Grobag Baby Sleep Bag makes life much easier, whether it’s for nap times when you’re out and about, or bedtime for your baby. You don't have to worry about blankets falling off and losing them when you’re out, and it's so reassuring that your baby won't pull it over their head like they could with a loose blanket.

Would you choose this product to win?

I don't feel like I can strongly comment on this question as I haven't personally used any products that are similar to compare them fairly. I would, however, like to say that from my experience of using the Grobag, I couldn’t fault it. It is a brilliant product with multiple uses, and I couldn't fault its performance.

What changes would you make to this product?

The only thing I could suggest to improve the product would be cosmetic only. I think it would be a brilliant idea to make it available for mums to personalise them with their baby's names, as it would appeal to a slightly wider market and make the product stand out from anything similar.

Tested by mum Camilla Shires for the Mother & Baby Awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I love the little storage bag (particularly as the 0.5 tog for travel on holiday). The temperature chart is also really helpful. It is easy to use – and fastens with just one main zip down the front, with optional poppers if the baby is a little skinnier on the arm. It’s a nice and roomy bag with a really cheerful design.

How did this product make your life easier?

Rather than using blankets, which the baby can simply kick off at night (resulting in them getting too cold and waking), using the Grobag means that they are kept cosy all night, and can kick about without waking. It also guarantees a "stable" level of warmth (0.5 / 1 / 1.5 tog etc.) so you can be confident that their body temperature will remain the same.

Would you choose this product to win?

I have a few sleeping bags from various makes, and while this one is great, it isn’t my favourite. I appreciate that the weight I requested was 0.5 tog (and so I expected it to be thin) but the price is far too expensive for the materials used. I would prefer a zip on the side of the bag, too, and don't particularly like the bright print pattern (but I know that’s my personal preference).

What changes would you make to this product?

The zip - it fastens under the chin and zips down but I would prefer it to fasten from the bottom up (like other bags I have). The way it is currently designed just means it is a bit fiddly to attach the zip when it is right under the baby's chin, and irritates them.

Tested by mum Hollie Smith for the Mother & Baby Awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would 100% recommend this product to a friend, because it saves so much faffing about with blankets, and the extra poppers for smaller babies are something I'd never have expected! It's so easy to use and it looks great. If they did them in adult sizes I'd definitely have one!

How did this product make your life easier?

This product makes my life so much easier. My son loves to be wrapped up in a blanket and regularly cries when it comes off him, but since having the Grobag, he’s slept through the night, as he’s no longer getting cold feet. And if he wakes up for a feed I don't even have to unwrap him! It's brilliant!!

Would you choose this product to win?

I would definitely choose this over any others. My son was five weeks premature and very, very tiny, even at five-months! The extra popper underneath the arms puts me at ease, because I know he can't wriggle down into the Grobag, while other brands don't seem to have anything similar to stop baby from doing so. Others also aren't as colourful as the Grobag, which is a shame, because I really love it!!

What changes would you make to this product?

The only thing I would change is the ability to use it on the go. I don't drive, so it would be great if there were some way to use it in the pram, because we're always on the go, and blankets are easily kicked off when in the pram. I just wish I could use the Grobag 24/7!

Tested by mum Lorna Ward for the M&B Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I love love love this product. When I was pregnant my friends told me to invest in one but they never appealed to me, and I probably would never have brought one if it hadn't been for me testing the product! This is so easy to use, very soft, washes well and my little boy loves it.

How did this product make your life easier?

My little monkey was always kicking his sheets off and his feet were always so cold in the morning. But this product keeps him snuggled up all night long, no more tucking him in. In fact he was so snug the first night I used it he slept through.

Would you choose this product to win?

I love the fact you can get different togs for warm and cold weather. The poppers are covered with fabric so no chance of the catching during the night. Very spacious so they can still have a wriggle, also they can't cover there face or slip down underneath the covers.

What changes would you make to this product?

I would increase the patterns available to make them more desirable. Other than that I don't think there's is any thing else I would change about this amazing product. It is an essential for every mum.

Tested by mum Hollie Quilter for the M&B Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I already recommended the Grobag to a friend! It had a beautiful design and was a lovely product. My 14-week-old baby seemed to be extremely comfortable, it was easy to wash and stayed soft. I was extremely pleased with it - I wouldn't use anything else now, it was baby luxury.

How did this product make your life easier?

It made my life easier as a mum because I wasn't using lots of blankets. If my baby is happy then I'm happy.

Would you choose this product to win?

It was comfortable, a good thickness - there are different togs avaliable but I found the 2.5 to be more than enough for my munchkin. It was a beautiful colour and design too; I really loved the picture on the front was very nice and an extremely good quality.

Tested by mum Tanya Cook for the M&B Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

Grobag are the pioneers of the sleep bag system and as such are the trusted experts. Their affiliation with the Lullaby Trust and the handy features such as the thermometer and information on how many layers babies should wear means I trust their products more than other similar ones on the market. Our baby has been using hers since 4 weeks and definitely sleeps more soundly because of it.

How did this product make your life easier?

I love the ease of zipping them in and out. The side and bottom zippers makes access for nappy changes easy and the poppers under the arms means you can tailor the fit to the size of your baby as she grows. Finally the travel sleep bags make transporting them from bed to car without waking them a reality.

Would you choose this product to win?

Yes, the sheer quality and range of bags make them the market leader. In fact gro bag is as synonymous with baby sleep bags as Hoovers are to vacuum cleaners. Recently they have collaborated with designers such as Anorak meaning not only are the bags, flexible, safe and practical but they are also on trend and design friendly too. I love the safe sleep tog system and everything this company stands for.

What changes would you make to this product?

If anything I would love them to bring the price down slightly as realistically you need a few bags for each stage and season. Also more design collaborations to produce funkier designs. Other than that there is nothing I would change about gro bags they know what they are doing.

Tested by mum Elizabeth Armitage for the M&B Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I love the design features of the 0-6 month Grobag. The side zip makes it really easy to get your baby into the sleeping bag without waking them and the zip cover means that you can be confident that the zip wont poke into your baby and hurt them or make them uncomfortable in the night. I also really liked the little poppers underneath the arms which mean that you can stop the sleeping bag riding up and coming over the baby's face when they are still small. The Grobags do tend to be more expensive than other brands of infant sleeping bags, however, I feel like it is really a case of you get what you pay for and this item is definately worth paying a little bit extra for.

How did this product make your life easier?

The side zip made getting my baby into his sleeping bag when he was half asleep a doddle! I feel much more comfortable leaving my baby to sleep in his Grobag than I would in loose sheets, which could either come up over his face or be easily kicked off in the night. The free room thermometer included with the grobag made it really easy to see which tog my baby should be in.

What changes would you make to this product?

My little boy is a very big boy and outgrew his 0-6 month sleeping bag by the time that he was 3months old. So I have now put him in a 6-18 month Grobag, which is also good but has a front zip instead of a side zip, I wish that there was a larger version of the side zipped sleeping bag as I found it easier to get him in and out of when half asleep and during nappy changes in the night.

Tested by mum Jennifer Orr for the M&B Awards 2017:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

Yes, definitely. The Grobag definitely is better than any other sleeping bag that I have used. It washes so well, colour never runs, dries super quick, the designs are very cute and there is a good range for boys, girls, and unisex. It is very safe to use and zips are well covered by material and there is no chance of hurting the wee one.

How did this product make your life easier?

Some of the other sleeping bags I have used are very short and I worry about being to egar to zip him up and catch his toes. The Grobag is a good length, not only avoid catching toes but also more space for my wee boy to move around. The fact that it washes so well and dries so quickly, it makes my life so much easier.

Would you choose this product to win?

I genuinely love it, and so does my wee man. The design is amazing, and the entire product functions so well. I haven't had any issues with loose threads or anything and it definitely holds its price. I also like that the packaging is environmentally friendly and is not over the top.

Tested by mum Amanda White for the M&B Awards 2016:

Why would you recommend this product to a friend/fellow mum?

The design of the Grobag is brilliant - the side zip and shoulder poppers mean that baby is kept safe and secure in the Grobag all night. The side zip also makes for easy access should you need to change a nappy in the night. The Grobag I tested was made from organic cotton and was lovely and soft - my son was very comfortable in it and slept well. The unisex design is lovely and the zip cover is a great feature. Yes, Grobags may be more expensive than those you can buy elsewhere, but they also last longer size-wise and the quality is second to none - the one I tested will 'fit' my son until he's 18 months (he's 7 months now).  I loved the cute unisex design too.

How does this product make your life easier as a mum?

I'm a bit of a worrier and have never liked putting my baby to bed with blankets in case he kicks them over his face in his sleep. The Grobag is fantastic & my son loved it. He was comfortable and slept well.... and I slept well knowing that he was safe & couldn't get cold or tangled up, like he could have done with a blanket. I will definitely be buying more Grobags.

If you could change one thing about this product what would it be?

I honestly wouldn't change a thing.

Tested by mum Karen Collins for the M&B Awards 2016:

Why would you recommend this product to a friend/fellow mum?

Grobags have great designs and are high quality. With every tog rating available it means you are prepared for any sleep situation. They wash very well and are easy to use. The variety of sizes also means that as children grow they can continue to be snug and safe whilst they sleep.

How does this product make your life easier as a mum?

I like knowing that the material is not going to creep up over my baby's face as they sleep no matter how much he might move at night. That gives me peace of mind. I don't have to worry about tucking sheets and blankets, I can just lay him down in his Grobag and he is ready to sleep

If you could change one thing about this product what would it be?

There isn't anything that I would change. They are good value for money and perform very well in the job they are designed for. There is a large variety of designs already.

Tested by mum Laura Elliott for the M&B Awards 2016:

Why would you recommend this product to a friend/fellow mum?

It is hard to fault the Grobag design. It comes in a large range of classic and fun designs, varying tog ratings and sizes. We tested the 100% organic Grobag which was so soft and snuggly, my baby looked very cosy and content at night. It is great quality and is showing no signs of wearing. Being easy to wash and dry makes the grobag and essential part of the nursey now and I have no need for all those sheets and blankets!

How does this product make your life easier as a mum?

Using a Grobag certainly gives me peace of mind that my baby is safe from wriggling under the covers at night. This is especially helpful now that she has moved to her own bedroom and I can't easily check on her throughout the night. The double poppers give added security.

If you could change one thing about this product what would it be?

If pushed I would say that poppers under the arms for the larger sizes of Grobag (as used for the 0-6 month size) would be a welcome addition for slimmer babies!

2015 – Shortlisted for 'Best Nursery' Award!

The Gro Company’s Grobag is a clever, beautifully made product that solves the problem of little ones kicking off their blankets at night.

The Grobag is available in different ‘togs’ – thicker for winter, thinner for summer. Poppers enable the arms to be adjusted according to size and the sleeping bag also washes well. The designs are lovely; suitable for boys and girls.

It’s a practical product – quite pricey but worth the money.

2015 – Shortlisted for 'Best Sleep Product' Award!

The Grobag (by The Gro Company) is made from soft, comfy material that will keep little ones warm at night. There are different ‘togs’ for warmer or cooler weather (to keep baby at the perfect temperature while sleeping) and details on the back of the Grobag packaging offer guidance re sizing and tog rating. The included room thermometer is also a nice, unexpected addition.

The biggest product flaw is the zip placement; the zip fastens under the armpit, which means that the Grobag must be removed in its entirety for night time changes – a major sleep disruption. On the plus side, both shoulders on the Grobag are fastened with poppers, which makes it easy to get baby in and out of the sleeping bag.

The Grobag comes in a range of fun, funky designs and the material is good quality. Some might consider the product a touch expensive; fix the zip structure and it’ll be unabashedly worth its price!

2014 – Sleep Award!

The Gro Company’s Grobag is 100% cotton and comes in a variety of fun, funky colours and designs. It is particularly brilliant for restless sleepers who are in the habit of kicking off their covers and waking up cold.

The Grobag is designed for optimum comfort, safety and durability. It’s machine washable and tumble-dryer safe, and works well as part of bedtime routine. The product is available in different togs to suit different seasons but there is also an ‘all year round’ tog that is equally suitable and might save you a couple of pounds (because you only need one Grobag).

The zip can be a bit fiddly and for children who are potty trained and waking up to use the loo at night, the Grobag can prove cumbersome – when time is of the essence; especially if there’s a bunk-bed involved! It’s also pricey in comparison to other brands but the quality and ingenuity of the product make it worth the extra pennies.

2014 – Nursery Award!

The Gro Company’s Grobag guarantees that baby will be covered up during sleep time. The bag stops little ones from kicking off blankets and their legs will not get stuck between cot bars. The bags come in a variety of togs and there is even a design that allows tots to be transferred from a car seat straight into bed – no palaver necessary! The material is nice and snugly and the Grobag washes well.

The zips can sometimes be a bit fiddly and the product is not ideal for older children who will need to use the toilet in the night but for pre-potty trained children, the Grobag is brilliant! It keeps wiggly babies warm and comfortable in all seasons and although fairly pricey, is great value for money!
