Mother & Baby 2018 Shortlist

At a glance:

These little shorts are nice and bright, but a few of our mum testers wished they had more of a swimming costume design for little girls.

What they say:

“These brand-new Splash Jammers have been developed to support children and adults with faecal incontinence weakness or those who just need a bit longer to become secure after toilet training.”

Tested by mum Aimee Lismore for the Mother & Baby Awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

No, as a mother of a girl, I felt the short design was odd and more suitable for a boy. My little girl was asking for a swimming costume over the top or to wear a top as well, which I didn't have. The design is nice and bright, but limited to only one girl and one boy design. That said, the item is high quality and really easy to transport.

How did the product make your life easier?

It is an excellent quality item that is easy to put on. The item is thick and well manufactured, and it feels high quality and that it will last a long time. I felt confident about my little girl being in the water, and assured it wouldn’t leak. However, I wouldn’t say it excelled above any other items in the market.

Would you choose this product to win?

No, I don't believe this item should win, as I didn't feel it was that useful as a new product coming to market. At this age, little girls are used to a swimming costumes, and the short design shape just seemed odd for a little girl to wear. She wasn't sure about it and as a parent, I would have preferred to have coverage of her top as well.

What changes would you make to the product?

If I could change one thing about this product I would have made a different shape for girls, rather than simply a different design for a girl and a boy. I think if it had a top included within the design then my little girl would have wanted to wear it more, and I would have been much happier about taking her out to public swimming pools.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I have already recommended it to so many people already. It's a great product and I wish I could have bought some before now. My son found them very comfortable, and didn’t complain about them once. They’re easy to slide on and off when in a rush to get the dry and dressed, and are also very handy to have about in the summer for the paddling pool. There's now no need to worry about a swimming nappy or accidents in the pool.

How did this product make your life easier?

This product makes life easy and cheaper (in the long run) because it's easy to put on, and saves money due to the fact you no longer have to buy swimming nappies. This product is great and easy to store, and doesn't take up a lot of room at all! Nothing leaks from them either, which is great.

Would you choose this product to win?

I would choose and recommend this product over any other due the fact they are so handy! They’re lovely and bright, and my son loved them. You don't have to worry about any leakages or spillages thanks to the great design, the only downside being that when my child did go to the toilet, it had nowhere to go so spilt all over the floor when taking them off.

What changes would you make to this product?

If I could change one thing I would change the waist band, due to it ending so high up, as it didn't look very comfortable but my son didn't complain. And again, when my son did go to the toilet, it didn't have anywhere to go so ended up all over the floor when I took them off. Other than that, they’re brilliant, and I will definitely be recommending them to everyone!

If you are looking for a product to use to take your child swimming so that you don’t need to worry about any toilet accidents, then this is the product for you. It gives a secure fit whilst being comfortable to wear, and is fairly nice to look at. The price is pretty standard for an item like this, but it is very well made so is good value for money. I would definitely recommend them.

How did this product make your life easier?

To be honest, I don’t feel that Splash Jammers make my life any easier as a mum, but I don’t think I’m quite the target market as I have a two-year-old who is pretty well toilet trained now. Even so, for her or my four-month-old, I would use a swim nappy and even with these, I would still use a swim nappy, so it didn’t solve a problem that I had, but I think for some people, who are concerned about accidents but can’t get their child in a nappy anymore, it would make life easier.

For me the biggest issue with these Splash Jammers is the lack of designs. I understand that a new product on the market will have limited variation, but it’s such a shame that the only two designs available have to be so typically boy/girl orientated, and are not more fun and gender neutral. If they had done that, it would have made them stand out as a market leader to me, and I really would have wanted them to win. Otherwise, I feel they’re fairly average and no different to anything else.

What changes would you make to this product?

As mentioned before, I would improve the variation in designs. Designs like dinosaurs, suitable for boys and for girls, that don’t play to all the usual gender stereotypes. It’s really the only downside that I can see to what is otherwise a well-made, high quality, comfortable and pretty good value for money product. Unfortunately, as a parent trying to teach my daughter that she can like fairies and dinosaurs, puppies and trains, that she can grow up to be a nurse, pilot, teacher, mechanic, anything that she wants to be, that’s a big deal and I wouldn’t choose either design, and therefore wouldn’t buy the product.

I would recommend these to other mums that are potty training, as they give you the extra security and confidence that nothing would leak while swimming. The design is really vibrant and my toddler loved the ones with the sharks on. They are also really easy to clean, and dry really quickly. I've not seen any similar product on the market for toddlers, and would highly recommend these.

How did this product make your life easier?

Splash Jammers gave me the extra confidence for if there was an accident in the pool. My son loved the design and was super excited to wear them, which made it easier to put them on without a struggle. Taking the Slash Jammers off was easier than I thought, as they are quite tight around the leg and waist (to capture any nasties) but came off really well.

Would you choose this product to win?

I've not seen any similar product on the market for toddlers and highly recommend these. They are great value for money, have made my toddler feel like a ‘big boy’, and really helped with potty training, although they are quite difficult to get off when wet, though I understand that they need to be tight in areas to catch any accidents that might happen.

What changes would you make to this product?

One thing I would change is how tight they are, but I’m not sure if this would be possible due to what they are designed for. Apart from that, these Splash Jammers are perfect, with bright colours that my boy absolutely loves. We have used these quite a few times now, and the colours haven’t faded one bit.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would definitely recommend this product to my mummy friends! It's great value for money and let's be honest, potty training is a hard time, not only for toddler, but also for mum to! These swim shorts give you the added confidence that if an accident does occur, all will be ok! Also, it's one less bulky item in your bag!

How did this product make your life easier?

I love this product! I honestly found it wonderful to take my son swimming without having to revert back to a more conventional swimming nappy. I found with a swimming nappy my son forgot to communicate needing or wanting the toilet, and became a little lazy, but with this, it was great! He was able to enjoy swimming fully and still remembered to tell us when he needed the toilet.

Would you choose this product to win?

Above all the other styles and types of swimwear on the market, I think this one is top in the fact that it's stylish, cute and bright. Something the child would be happy to wear and as a parent I would be happy to buy, considering its practicality. The price of the product is very reasonably for the quality of the product.

What changes would you make to this product?

I think the product is great! The design is brilliant, and the materials used cannot be faulted. Watching my son swim and move around, he seems to have no issues. However, I do think it would be a great idea to include a little, waterproof bag to hold the swim wear after your swimming session, just for that extra hygienic twist on being the frontrunner.
