At a glance:

This clever little Gro-Egg thermometer changes colour to let you know whether the temperature of your baby's room is ok. Our panel of mum testers loved this product, voting it to win silver in the Safety Product category of our 2018 awards. The only slight downside is that it needs to stay plugged in, so is not too transportable.

What they say:

"Peace of mind at a glance – the innovative Gro-Egg changes colour to let you know at a glance whether the temperature of a room is too low, too high or just right, helping you maintain a safe sleeping environment for your baby. As an added bonus it even works well as a gentle night light.

A yellow glow suggests a comfortable temperature for children to sleep in, whilst a blue glow suggests it’s too cold and a red glow suggests it’s too warm. The colours act as a reminder for you to cool or heat the room, to modify the baby’s clothing, to use a different tog Grobag Baby Sleep Bag or for non-sleep bag users to alter the level of bedding."

Tested by mum Rebecca Weatherley for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

Yes. As soon as you walk into the nursery, it immediately lets you know the temperature of the room. Now I know what to dress my baby in at night time, depending on the temperature of the room as shown on the egg. The orangey glow is also a useful night light.

How did this product make your life easier?

Using the Gro-Egg is really simple as it is very sensitive to changes in temperature and gives you a reading straight away. Life is also easier as my little one now has a night light and isn’t crying as much because it’s so dark.

Would you choose this product to win?

Yes, this product is so aesthetically pleasing and makes you aware of how hot or cold your baby might be, which is crucial for their health. The only negative for me is that it is quite pricey.

What changes would you make to this product?

I would make the product battery operated or wireless so it can be moved around the room and not have to rely on being close to a plug socket with trailing wires.

Tested by mum Joni Walker for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend this product as it clearly indicates the room temperature. It changes colour to red if the room is too hot and blue if it is too cold. It is a neat design and doesn’t take up too much space. It comes with information on how best to dress your baby, based on the temperature of the room which is so handy.

How did this product make your life easier?

This product is great as it clearly lets you see what the temperature is in baby's room and you can dress them accordingly for bed. I especially liked the simplicity of the colour coding. I was able to make changes to the room if needed without disturbing my baby.

Would you choose this product to win?

I would choose this product as it is really simple to use; you plug it in and it’s ready to go. It is mains operated so you don’t have to worry about continuously changing batteries. It also has a nice soft glow lighting which isn’t too bright.

What changes would you make to this product?

It would be great if it had a clock, so you could check the time too.

Tested by mum Victoria Rea for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

At a simple glance, this Gro-Egg will show you whether your baby’s room is at the right temperature, using a colour coded system of blue, amber or red. This product gives such reassurance to new parents who are paranoid about everything, so I would really recommend it to them. It gives you peace of mind that your baby is sleeping well in suitable conditions.

How did this product make your life easier?

The Gro-Egg is such a simple, easy to set up, easy to use product. I have been using it for almost a year now. I installed it in our bedroom before baby arrived and transferred it to the nursery when our baby boy was about six-months-old. It has travelled with us on three trips to Spain. It’s so light and neat, there no excuse not to take it!

Would you choose this product to win?

I would definitely choose a Gro-Egg above any other thermometers and temperature devices on the market as it is so very easy to use. Plug it in (in a sensible location) and you’re done. You don’t need to change batteries or re-charge it. It’s just so simple. You can also buy shells, an owl, a lamb, or a penguin to put over the egg, making it look like a cute, glowing animal friend in the corner. I invested in an owl and I love it.

What changes would you make to this product?

In Spain, we discovered that the Gro-Egg does not account for humidity, so although it could be displaying orange, the same bedtime attire was in no way applicable for little one. We had to adjust and experiment. I would say, be aware of this if you are travelling somewhere humid.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

The Gro-Egg has great features and gives me peace of mind that my little one is safe. It’s ideal in both hot and cold weather. Also, it is really easy to use as you literally just have to plug it in! The design is small and discreet and it would also be easy to transport.

How did this product make your life easier?

As a first-time mum, knowing how to dress your newborn for bed is hard! You want them to be as safe as possible, which is why I chose to use the grow bags as they are safe and secure. I found that I felt more reassured with the Gro-Egg close by at bedtime.

Would you choose this product to win?

I would definitely choose this product above others on the market, I think it is well made and doesn't look cheap as some others can. It's definitely well-used in our house at the moment, with the change in the weather. I really love this product and although at £24.99 I do think it is slightly overpriced, I would still always purchase the Gro-Egg because I trust it!

What changes would you make to this product?

I would love it if the Gro-Egg played some lullabies to soothe my baby to sleep.

Tested by mum Amy Radmall for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

This is a very easy to use thermometer, but I am also aware that there are cheaper products that do the same thing elsewhere. However, I like that the Gro-Egg is so easy to transport and the light system is so simple yet effective.

How did this product make your life easier?

This product makes my life easier because it makes it easier to see how hot or cold the room is for a baby. As an adult, you may think the room is cooler or warmer than it actually is, which would be dangerous for little ones. Using this, I can make sure the baby is appropriately dressed for bed.

Would you choose this product to win?

I love how fun this product is, the smiley face and sad face make my toddler laugh. However, I would perhaps not choose it to win as I think it is very expensive.

What changes would you make to this product?

I would add a panel to the sides so you could move it without it affecting the temperature. It picks up the heat from your fingers!
