At a glance:

Tesco Loves Baby Ultra Dry Nappies are lightweight but also roomier than other nappies, with a good, thick waist band and extra stretchy sides. They keep little ones dry and comfortable all night and are gentle on sensitive skin. The design is simple, not too gaudy, and the slim fit of the nappy makes it hardly noticeable under clothing. The tabs can be temperamental (they have a tendency to come off if pulled too hard) and the wetness indicator seems quite pointless – in part because the nappy is so good! A great all round product and good value for money

What they say:

“Part of the Tesco Loves Baby range, these Ultra Dry disposable nappies are specially designed to provide day and night time dryness confidence. The nappies have a super-absorbent core and extra dry layer to draw away wetness and lock it in place. Soft materials and stretchy sides provide baby with a snug and comfortable fit.”

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I have actually already recommended the Tesco Loves Baby Ultra Dry nappies to a mummy friend who has also told me she likes them. The main reasons for my recommendation are that I trust these nappies not too leak, and I love how comfortable they are around my daughter’s waist. They don't feel cheap like some of the other supermarket brands, and I really like the price of them. Thee nappies are so easy and simple to use, I will definitely continue to recommend them to my mummy friends.

How did this product make your life easier?

It makes my life easier as a mum as I know I can go out without worrying that my five-month-old baby will leak out of her nappy. That said, I also don't 100% trust this product, and always feel I have to take a spare pair of clothes for her, although I think I would feel the same with any nappy and this definitely doesn't stop me from using these nappies. I plan to continue using them for the foreseeable future.

Would you choose this product to win?

I would choose this product above all others, purely because the quality and price tag is far better than competitors nappies. I would like to see this nappy win an award as I’ve been really pleased with how comfortable they look on my baby, and how absorbent they have been.

What changes would you make to this product?

A massive improvement for me would be a wetness indicator, so I could see at a glance when my baby’s nappy was wet.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would not recommend this product to a fellow mum as I believe there are far better nappies out there, for a very similar price. The product was comfortable when first put on, and the tabs on the side worked well. We didn’t have any leaks with these nappies, but we also didn’t leave a very swollen nappy on baby for very long. Once swollen, there were very big gaps between the nappy and my baby’s legs, so I do believe we could have had some unbelievable leaks if we had not changed him quickly.

How did this product make your life easier?

The product only made my life easier in so far as any disposable nappy would. That said, I have used better nappies. I found that these nappies swelled up an amazing amount in contact with the slightest bit of wee, which actually meant we found ourselves changing our baby more often. I also feel that this wasn’t exactly comfortable for my baby – the nappy would sag so much that some actually fell off when he stood up!

Would you choose this product to win?

I would not choose this product above others on the market, or to win a Mother & Baby award. The key issue for me was how much the nappy expanded when wet. This meant that the nappy was not a thing of convenience and was actually more difficult, as we had to change our baby more frequently for his own comfort and to avoid leaks. There are other nappies out there which are far better, for a very similar price.

What changes would you make to this product?

I would replace the absorbent part of the nappy, as in comparison to other nappies I felt this expanded a great deal.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would completely recommend this product to a friend or fellow mum as I loved how they matched the design of Pampers nappies and the performance is what I would expect. They are easy to use and seemed comfortable for my baby. I also thought both the nappies themselves and the packaging was visually appealing.

How did this product make your life easier?

This nappy range was adequate for me, as I felt it wasn't any different to any other brands out there. However, I feel that the price point and availability of the product (seems to always be stocked at my local Tesco) is excellent. I think the design matched leading brands very well and I was very impressed with the quality of the product. That said, after using the nappies over time, I feel they only reached a medium level of quality, that didn't outshine other brands and I did experience some leaks. I also found that due to the colouring of the nappies, I couldn’t tell whether it was wet or dirty.

Would you choose this product to win?

I wouldn't choose this product to win as I do prefer using Pampers nappies as they are more comfortable and perform much better with no leakages.

What changes would you make to this product?

I would improve the performance of the product because I think that having no leakages is the main priority of nappies. As a mum, having to change your baby's clothes is a hassle and something that could be avoided. It also saves on washing too. I think once Tesco have mastered that, it would be my favourite brand on the market.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

The nappies were easy to use and had a good design, but I don't think I would recommend these to other parents because I found them to be quite smelly and also thought they lacked a wetness indicator. They were a good price, which is great for other mums, but personally I have used similar priced nappies and not had this problem. I also found that they made my little girl a little sore at times, mainly after having a wee and for that reason I'm not sure that they have the wetness lock as other nappies do.

How did this product make your life easier?

The nappy was good in the way that I didn't have any leaks and the nappy would last overnight, but I didn't like that you couldn't tell if the nappy was wet as there was no wetness indicator on it. I find that really useful as sometimes my little girl can go some time without having a wee and I rely on this feature. It was a good price compared to other brands of nappies which is a good point (especially while on maternity leave!) and the fit was good. But I found there was a really bad smell to these nappies – sometimes I thought my little girl had done a poo in her nappy but when I went to change it she hadn't. This would definitely put me off purchasing this nappy again.

Would you choose this product to win?

I personally don't think this nappy should win I'm afraid as I have used other own brand nappies (Lidl, Aldi and Asda) and this one was the one I would be least likely to use again. This was mainly due to the smell they had after they became wet, the lack of wetness indicator, and that they made my daughter a bit sore at times, which made me question whether they were comfortable for her.

What changes would you make to this product?

The main thing I would change is the smell issue I had. I wonder if Tesco could also change the nappies slightly so the wet stays off the skin a bit more than it does – the nappy really needs to lock away the wetness. I wouldn't purchase these nappies in the future because of the reasons noted above. I feel there are own brand products with the same price which are better quality and performance.

Tested by mum Michelle Flaherty for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

The nappies were a really good fit and they looked really comfortable on my baby, especially around his tummy and legs. I can't believe how absorbent the nappies were – my son was always dry even when the nappy was a little big with wee! I highly recommend these nappies as they are a total life saver for me as they don't leak, have a comfy fit and most importantly keep my son dry no matter how much he wees. They are excellent value for money and I have already recommended to friends and family.

How did this product make your life easier?

As a mum of five boys, I can honestly say I have tried every brand of nappy out there and these nappies were by far one of the best! I tend to have problems with nappies leaking as my boys wee a lot, but with these nappies I had no leaks. It was great knowing I could take the baby out and about without worrying I had packed spare clothes for accidents.

Would you choose this product to win?

I most definitely think these nappies should win! As I've said I have tried pretty much every brand out there and none of them compare to these when it comes to being leak free. I don't have any bad points and I've swapped to the Tesco Loves Baby Ultra Dry nappies after trying them for this review. The price is also fantastic!

What changes would you make to this product?

The only thing I would change about these nappies would be adding character pictures. Everything else about the nappy Is perfect and I will continue to use these for my son, and continue to recommend them to friends and family – thank you Tesco!
