Baby girl jackets for keeping stylish and snug

Baby girl jacket

Perfect for spring and autumn, or when the British weather is being temperamental throughout the year, a jacket for your baby girl will keep them warm and cosy without the risk of them overheating as you pop in and out visiting friend's homes and shops.

Lighter than a winter coat but thicker than a cardigan or jumper, the right jacket will keep them at just the right temperature and can be easily removed without the faff of wrestling a knit from over their head.

There are plenty of adorable baby girl jackets on the market (some of which we'd love adult sizes of too!) so we've done the research and listed the best available this year. Here, you can be sure of a quality jacket for your baby girl that's not only cute but functional too.

Important considerations

A jacket's a jacket, right? Well, before you pick up that cute jacket on a whim at your local store, you should take these things into consideration to make sure you're getting the best for your little one, and your money too.

  • Material: Natural fibres like cotton are best for your baby’s sensitive skin as they're breathable, warm, and comfy. Baby clothes made from materials like nylon and polyester may cause skin sensitivity and discomfort because of their inability to regulate babies’ body temperature.

  • Safety: You should choose a jacket free of any choking hazards i.e. decorative bows and buttons, or a drawstring closure that could present a risk of strangulation.

  • Size: You should choose the right size for your little one based on their age, but if you’re unsure go for a jacket on the bigger side. This will give them growth room, room for layering if necessary, and make it easier to take on and off.

  • Season: While it may be tempting to choose a thick winter jacket for winter, these can restrict your baby’s movement and make them uncomfortable. If you plan to be out for long periods of time, a warm coat or snowsuit would be best, but for quick trips out, opt for a jacket that you can layer.

  • Style: This is completely up to you! However, you should consider your baby's comfort (a high zip may irritate their neck) and the ease with which you'll be able to put the jacket on and take it off.

Here's our pick of the best baby girl jackets for 2021. Looking for baby boy jackets? While most jackets will suit both baby boys and girls (boys can wear pink too), you can find our pick of the best baby boy jackets here.

Can my baby wear their jacket in the car?

While it may not be as thick as a winter coat, you should still keep layers to a minimum in the car.

Too much padding between your baby and their car seat strap could run the risk of making their car seat less safe as it stops the strap from being secured tightly enough.

If you are worried about the car being too cold, the NCT instead suggests laying a blanket over them, though you should bear in mind that cars will warm up quickly so they may not need the blanket for very long.

If you're not sure if your baby is warm enough or are worried they are too hot, check their tummy as this is a much better indicator than their hands to test temperature.
