Baby Ocado Size 1 Ultra Dry Nappies

At a glance:

Whilst the nappies were aesthetically quite plain, they were absorbent and most of our mum testers reported no leaks. The sizing was in line with competitors, and the nappy comes up quite high on baby’s back, to prevent liquid escaping.

What they say:

“Ocado Ultra Dry nappies combine a super absorbent filling with an extra soft drying-layer to keep your baby comfortable and dry throughout the day and night. Made with ultra-soft, stretchy materials to ensure a snug, cosy fit.”

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend this product to another mum as we have had a really positive experience with it. Whilst using these nappies, we have had no leaks, both during the day and the night and we cannot say the same for other brands we have tried in the past. These nappies definitely live up to their 'Ultra Dry' name, with the claim of up to 12 hours absorbency. The nappies fit my four-week-old really well. I had never thought of buying Ocado before, but will do now in future.

How did this product make your life easier?

After having tried Aldi, Asda and Pampers, this brand is the only one I’ve seen which has a cut-out feature at the front for the belly button to be exposed. This is a feature I particularly like for new-borns as, when my daughter’s umbilical cord was drying up, we had to fold down the front of the nappy to let the air get in for it to heal. Why other brands of nappy don't do this I shall never know! It is such a simple thing but makes life so much easier when you have a wriggling baby. Also, we have not experienced any leaks.

Would you choose this product to win?

After trying these nappies out, we would buy them again. They are great value for money at £1.29 for a pack of 28! We are currently going through approximately ten nappies per day, so for a pack to last nearly three days at this price is fantastic compared to rivals. I can't say definitively that this nappy should win, as I prefer the designs of the Mamia brand.

What changes would you make to this product?

If I were to change one thing about this nappy, it would be the thickness and overall feel of the product. Don't get me wrong, they are super value, but they are not very thick and also smell quite strongly of chemicals.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I wouldn't personally recommend it to friends or family because I don’t think it matched the quality of other brands, despite being so cheap. I did like how the nappy really held in place with the tabs, as it meant there weren't any leaks. The wetness indicator wasn't very clear, the colour change was not very stark. I also thought that the material was a little rough, especially around the top of the nappy.

How did this product make your life easier?

For a disposable nappy, it's very convenient and easy to use. It's absorbent and didn't leak! However, the material bulges quite a lot when it is full, meaning that my little one found it difficult to sleep as it wasn’t very comfortable.

Would you choose this product to win?

I wouldn't consider changing my normal brand to these, as the nappy was too plain aesthetically. Also, it is only available via online ordering, as it is Ocado, so if you didn’t normally shop at Waitrose, it wouldn’t be worth the delivery charge to order just nappies to your door.

What changes would you make to this product?

If this brand could be bought in regular shops I would consider buying them again. Also, if there were some designs on the nappies they would appeal to me more.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

When you first pick up the nappy, it feels very stiff, in comparison to other brands of nappies we have used. This worries me as I don’t want the material to be rough against his umbilical cord. Otherwise, the nappy has the same features as its competition: a wet indicator and compact sizing etc. It is a good product but not my favourite on the market.

How did this product make your life easier?

The product is the correct sizing, in line with other size one nappies on the market. I have found that it did not leak the majority of the time which was good. However, it did not do so well overnight, my baby woke up quite wet in the morning. The other issue that I have found is that the nappy was quite often stuck to my son’s bottom when I was changing him and I would have to peel it off, which wasn’t comfortable for him.

Would you choose this product to win?

I would not choose this nappy because the material feels a bit stiff and rough, which is the last thing I want for my delicate new-born. The absorbency is not great either. Otherwise, the nappy is pretty standard but nothing special stands out.

What changes would you make to this product?

The material should be softer and I think there could be a higher level of absorbency.

Would you recommend this to other mums?

Yes, I think so. It seemed comfortable for my little one and she did not get any nappy rash as a result. It did leak sometimes, which was irritating, but I quite liked the fact that the nappies were so plain, without bright and garish designs that show through clothes.

How did this product make your life easier?

This seems like a very hit and miss nappy, the wetness indicator sometimes didn’t work at all, but some days worked fine! Therefore, my life was not made particularly easy. But I did like the snug fit of the nappy on my baby’s bum, she was nice and comfortable.

Would you choose this product to win?

I would stick to other brands on the market as there are others at a similar price that perform better. Although this is good value, the material is not soft enough.

What changes would you make to this product?

The indicator strips don’t always work, which is annoying as they only have one job. I think, in general, the quality of the whole nappy could be improved, if so I would buy them again.

Tested by mum Anna Mitchell-Edwards for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

Would you recommend this to other mums?

I would recommend this product as it seemed to be comfortable on my daughter! I found it to be a very clean and hygienic product, even when heavily soiled, the contents remained securely inside the nappy and did not leak out and ruin my daughter’s clothes. The material did not cause any irritation on her skin, which I feel is a very important factor as newborn skin is so delicate.

How did this product make your life easier?

I felt that the nappy was secure on my daughter, so I didn't have to worry about any leakage or spillage! It was secure around both of her legs and the tabs were sticky, so I knew there was not a risk of it coming undone. It also came high up on her back, which is something I look for in a nappy. The cut-out bit was great for accommodating her little umbilical cord and making sure it got enough air.

Would you choose this product to win?

I would choose this product above others and I do feel that it should win as I found it to be great value for money - something that is essential as a mum! Although it was a basic product, it did the job it was intended to do brilliantly, without the need for 'gimmicks' or added extras. It did not leak and made for very quick changing time, as the nappy came off super easily.

What changes would you make to this product?

I would make a change to the wet indicator on the nappy, as it was not very clear, meaning that it was hard to tell if her nappy was wet or not. Also, I would also like the nappy to be a bit more padded as it was quite thin.
