This pressure-fit gate has a swing-shut self-closing mechanism and a clever extendable feature that makes it a good option if the space where you’ll be fixing it is wider than the average doorway or staircase. It also worked well in a narrow space.

There is a bottom bar, though. Testers struggled with installing it. It was supplied with a spanner, but further tools were required. However, once successfully mounted, it felt really sturdy and secure. Opening it takes some getting used to, but testers liked being able to set it to open in either direction.

Vicky Daly, 34, from Cheshire, is mum to Finn, 16 months. She says: ‘We had problems installing this. The instructions were confusing and the opening mechanism is stiff and tricky to operate.’

Sarah Lovett, 33, from West Sussex, is mum to Philip, one. She says: ‘It swings shut automatically and opens easily with practice. Sturdy, secure and good quality. Useful two-way opening too.’

Laura Crumbley, 25, from Wigan, is mum to Finton, 18 months. She says: ‘Tricky to mount but sturdy once installed. It’s harder to open than others we tested, especially one-handed, and didn’t swing shut on my stairs.’
