Are trampolines safe for children?

When buying anything for your children, safety is naturally your number one concern so there are some factors to consider before purchasing your trampoline.

Firstly, if you have a child under the age of six, we typically recommend steering clear of garden trampolines over 6ft. Safety guidelines issued by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents state that trampolining is unsafe for children under six as they're unable to control their bouncing.

That being said, there are several products on the market designed especially for toddler play and development so your little one doesn't have to miss out on the fun and can bounce safely.

Which trampoline should I choose?

Trampolines come in various shapes and sizes to suit the needs of both toddlers and older children but, with so many to choose from and design features to consider, which are the best trampolines for kids?

Safety: We'd recommend that you always choose a trampoline with safety pads that will sufficiently cover the springs, hooks, and frames.

Size: Realistically, the size of your garden will mostly determine which trampoline you go for. While you will have more choice with a bigger garden, bear in mind that the larger the surface area of the trampoline, the bigger the bounce. There are bound to be the odd bumps and sprains, especially on larger trampolines, so to put your mind at ease select one with built-in cushioning and safety netting on the larger models.

If you have a smaller garden to work with, there are plenty of compact choices you can look at. Alternatively, you could choose an in-ground trampoline that can be embedded within flat, grassy areas of the garden.

Shape: Typically, trampolines come in oval, round, and rectangle shapes. An oval trampoline is ideal if you have a narrow garden while rectangular is great if you've got a mini gymnast in the family.

Weight restrictions: Some trampolines are made for just one bouncer at a time and while larger ones have the size to accommodate more, it is still advised that only one child bounce at a time. As 60 per cent of injuries occur when more than one person is on the trampoline, make sure any bouncers are patient, careful, and supervised.

However, we know that children can get excited to join in and more than one will be tempted to bounce at a time if you've got more than one child or they have friends who want to play too. If you think this is going to be likely, or have older kids, look at the maximum user weight to deem if it's enough. You might want to check this out for any bouncing of your own too, even if you tell yourself you're not going to!

Regardless of your preferences or garden space, we've done all the research to produce an extensive list of the best trampolines for kids you can buy now.

Where should I place my trampoline?

Large, outdoor trampolines should be placed on energy-absorbing ground such as bark chip, grass, or other cushioning materials and never on concrete or a hard patio. You'll want to allow grassy space around the trampoline of at least 1.5 metres on all sides (ideally 2.5 metres) in case your child does fall off, keeping the ground clear of obstacles like rogue toys or washing lines.

How much should I spend on a trampoline?

When choosing your trampoline, it may be tempting to go for a cheaper model but if it seems too good to be true, it may well be, so be sure to check that the quality can withstand some serious bouncing. Look for brands that offer long warranties or trampolines made from tough materials that will deteriorate less quickly and last longer. Depending on the age of your youngster, you may want additional security measures such as a spring-free trampoline or a safety net which could make your trampoline cost a little more than expected.

Can I leave a trampoline up all year?

Large trampolines can be very difficult to take down and store, so if you want a trampoline you can put up and forget about whatever the weather, you'll want to invest in one which is durable and made of rust-free materials. It's also worth thinking about things like a winter cover to protect it from the elements. Larger trampolines should be tied down for safety and will help on windy days if you're unable to pack down the trampoline.
