Your baby’s first teeth are a huge milestone, but before they reach this, you’ll be faced with a fair amount of drool and tears of discomfort. Luckily, there are plenty of baby teethers on the market to help ease pain.
How to ease your baby’s teething pain?
We’ve summed up ten ways to ease your baby’s teething pain here, but if you’re looking for some natural ways to ease the pain alongside the teether, try:
- Soaking a new and clean dishcloth or flannel in warm water or chamomile tea and give it to your baby to chomp on. The warm water can ease aching gums and actually help teeth to break through the gums.
- Put your baby’s teether in the fridge for half an hour – the cold sensation will help relieve sore gums.
- Depending on your baby’s age, freeze a cucumber – alternatively, freeze strips of cucumber as the combination of cold but crunchy can help.
- Teething gels contain a mild anaesthetic to numb the gums. Choose a sugar-free gel and check with your GP if your baby is under four-months-old.
How to clean your baby teether?
Most of the teethers in this list can be cleaned in a dishwasher or a steriliser for added convenience. It’s also a good idea to find one that can be put in the fridge, as cooling the teether can give relief to swollen, sore gums.
What are the best baby teethers on the market?
With plenty of different teethers to choose from, it’s a good idea to experiment with a couple of different ones that offer the right amount of pressure to ease discomfort. Try different textures and different shapes – circular teethers are the best for when the front teeth are coming through, whilst a longer, thinner design can help with molars.
From our Mother & Baby awards, to the products our mums rave about, we’ve summed up the best baby teethers on the market here.
Created in France in 1961, Sophie the Giraffe has been helping teething babies for a long time. Stimulating all five senses, Sophie squeaks when pressed and has dark spots for visual stimulation. With long legs that help hard to reach molars, soft and bumpy ears to soothe sore gums and a light and easy grip for small hands, Sophie will soon become your baby’s best friend. That said, compared to others on the market, Sophie the Giraffee cannot be submerged, or put in a steam steriliser or dishwasher as it affects her squeak.
Another cute, natural rubber teething toy, Gertie the Good Goose has been cleverly designed to help avoid any mould issues. With a lovely quack, plus contrasting colours that help develop visual focus, Gertie soothes tender gums with his beak, feet and tail feathers. Gertie is really easy to find in the car seat or cot which is a huge plus, but as Gertie is made from natural rubber and colours, you can’t sterilise or use alcohol-based wipes to clean him, as the colours will run.
