The best baby teethers to soothe sore gums

Baby teething

Your baby’s first teeth are a huge milestone, but before they reach this, you’ll be faced with a fair amount of drool and tears of discomfort. Luckily, there are plenty of baby teethers on the market to help ease pain.

How can you ease your baby’s teething pain?

We’ve summed up 10 ways to ease your baby’s teething pain here, but if you’re looking for some natural ways to ease the pain alongside the teether, try:

  • Soaking a new and clean dishcloth or flannel in warm water or chamomile tea and give it to your baby to chomp on. The warm water can ease aching gums and actually help teeth to break through the gums.
  • Put your baby’s teether in the fridge for half an hour – the cold sensation will help relieve sore gums.
  • Depending on your baby’s age, freeze a cucumber – alternatively, freeze strips of cucumber as the combination of cold but crunchy can help.
  • Teething gels contain a mild anaesthetic to numb the gums. Choose a sugar-free gel and check with your GP if your baby is under four-months-old.

How to clean your baby's teether

Most of the teethers in this list can be cleaned in a dishwasher or a steriliser for added convenience. It’s also a good idea to find one that can be put in the fridge, as cooling the teether can give relief to swollen, sore gums.

What are the best baby teethers on the market?

With plenty of different teethers to choose from, it’s a good idea to experiment with a couple of different ones that offer the right amount of pressure to ease discomfort. Try different textures and different shapes – circular teethers are the best for when the front teeth are coming through, whilst a longer, thinner design can help with molars.

From winners in the Mother&Baby Awards to the products our mums rave about, we’ve summed up the best baby teethers on the market here.

Created in France in 1961, Sophie La Girafe has been helping teething babies for a long time. Stimulating all five senses, Sophie squeaks when pressed and has dark spots for visual stimulation. With long legs that help hard to reach molars, soft and bumpy ears to soothe sore gums and a light and easy grip for small hands, Sophie will soon become your baby’s best friend. That said, compared to others on the market, Sophie La Girafe cannot be submerged, or put in a steam steriliser or dishwasher as it affects her squeak.

Sophie La Girafe has won various awards at the M&B Awards over the years; read our full review here.

Tested by mum Jenny Paige for the M&B Awards 2016: "I would recommend this to a fellow mum because Sophie La Girafe is a very baby friendly and soft teething toy. Sophie is hand crafted making each Sophie unique. Sophie is make of a soft rubber making her very durable when the baby is chewing on her. She has lots of different angles and areas for the baby to chew on in the hope that each area will give some relief to a teething baby. Sophie is easy washed down to keep her fresh and clean. She also squeaks when squeezed. As a teething toy, Sophie is fashionable and an attractive toy to have. The packaging is lively and I think this would make a lovely gift to a new baby."

The design of the teether is simple, easy to transport and really easy to clean. My little boy loves to play with this teether and always prefers this one to the many others that he already has. There is also no need to chill the teether, like others suggest, which is great."

Tested by mum Stacey Matthews for the Mother&Baby Awards 2018: "The necklace is very comfy and I forgot I was wearing it at some points, which is a bonus, as my initial thought was that it would be uncomfortable and heavy around my neck, but I was wrong. As the product is around your neck, it takes away the constant need to have to bend down to pick up a teething toy that the baby has dropped. It also saves my hair from being pulled out as his focus is on the necklace which is great."
