Will you be putting the Elf on the Shelf this Christmas?

Section: Christmas
Elf on the Shelf

Silently moving around the house, hiding in different places, keeping a watchful eye on naughty and nice children... The Elf on the Shelf has become a true Christmas tradition in America and has finally made it across to the UK.

Previously, the Elf on the Shelf book hasn't been published in the UK, but has now been launched, so British children can partake in this family tradition.

The festive scout elf is accompanied by a book telling of his important role, making a note of children's behaviour and reporting back to Father Christmas each night.

Instagram and Pinterest are filled with photos through the festive period of how parents have brought the story to life with the little elf posing throughout the house.

Elf on the Shelf

Co-author Carol Aebersold said: "Unwittingly, the tradition provided an added benefit: it helped the children to better control themselves. All it took was a gentle reminder that the "scout elf is watching", for errant behaviour to be modified."

This year, you can also get a Scout Elves at Play Kit (£24.95, elfontheshelf.co.uk), which includes a book with more than 100 tips and tricks and 15 elf-sized tools. Use the tools to create even more magical and inventive sticky situations for your little Elf to get himself into. Tools include:

  • Snowflake Swing
  • Cheery Chair
  • Holiday Hook
  • Merry Message Cube
  • Holiday Harness
  • Two Glacier Grips
  • Peppermint Grappling Hook
  • Christmas Climbing Boots
  • Candy Cane Cable
