Pram hand muffs - the easy way to keep your hands warm on long walks

Pram hand muffs

It’s firmly autumn, and it won’t be long before winter hits, and with these seasons come cold hands. If you’re pushing a pram, we all know how likely it is for your fingers to turn blue as you’re pushing your newborn around the block for the third time today, trying to get them to drift off to sleep before you lose a digit to frostbite.

What you need is a pram hand muff. “A what?” I hear you say! A pram hand muff! It’s basically a big glove that covers both your hands while you push your pram, attaching to the handles of the pram and keeping you toasty warm.

Once you’ve tried a hand muff in the depths of winter, you’ll wonder how you ever coped without one.

Why not wear gloves? Using a hand muff means your hands are instantly free to help baby, rather than wrestling to get gloves off to grab a dummy or wipe away a tear. Plus, you won’t lose your gloves on a walk when you’ve got a hand muff.

(Top tip: they’re also pretty good for supermarket trolleys – but we can’t guarantee you won’t get a few funny looks).

These keep my hands warm and cosy on long walks; there are separate compartments for each hand, and the lining is soft and warm. It’s easy to fit on to the handlebars; wrap it around and secure using the poppers.

This looks good and is so cosy warm you might end up doing a far longer walk than you planned. It’s trimmed in faux fur and lined in fleece, so your hands can withstand that northerly wind all the way round the block. It fixes to the pram handle easily thanks to Velcro fastenings, and has a middle popper to keep your hands safe too.

Most of the hand muffs we’ve featured are only available in one colour, but this Clair de Lune hand muff comes with a range of five different fur linings – my favourite is the leopard version (as it is with everything, to be honest). The water-resistant material protects your hands if it’s raining, while the fleece lining keeps them toasty warm.

Recommended by mum Jayne King in our MumTribe Facebook group, this double hand muff will keep your hands protected through the coldest of winter walks. It has a luxurious faux fur trim, with a fleece lining, and the material outer comes in six different colours. The company is family run, started by ‘self-confessed pram addict Yvonne’ who wanted to find fun, stylish accessories for her baby’s pram.

An affordable option, this universal hand muff attaches quickly to your pushchair handlebars with poppers. The fleece lining keeps your hands warm while the outer material is waterproof.

Not a muff but mittens, these individually attach to your pushchair handle. They have supersoft sheepskin trims and a fleece lining. They’re water repellent too, so your hands will stay dry if there’s a sudden shower. As they’re mittens, not a muff, they are a little more fiddly to get your hands out of than the others on our list, but not a lot. They are the most expensive on our list, by far, but you are paying for real sheepskin - that's the big difference.
