New mum's retreat: The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel in Suffolk

Section: Travel

Baby-free windows are rare and hard to come by, that's why we have hunted around for the most relaxing and indulgent getaways for new mums. In this week's hot seat we review The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel in Newmarket, Suffolk.

Overview:

If you're in desperate need of country air, a state-of-the-art spa and some me time, then look no further as Bedford Lodge is one of the most relaxing hotels we've ever experienced. It's grand decor has the essence of a country home, whilst the facilities are uber modern and luxurious - the perfect blend for mums needing some TLC.  The hotel was originally built as a hunting lodge for the Sixth Duke of Bedford in the 18th century and still retains the intrigue and charm to this day. There is a spa, gym, restaurant, bar and three acres of secluded gardens onsite... what more could you possibly need!

Location:

This beautiful Georgian hotel is located in the picturesque town Newmarket, adjacent to some of the most famous paddocks and training stables in the world.

Rooms:

The rooms at Bedford Lodge are comfy, spacious and stunning with majestic splashes of jewel hues and plush throws. The rooms all boast king-size beds, Sky TV, coffee making facilities and free Wi-Fi. The bathrooms are stocked with gorgeous Molton Brown products and the bath/shower combo is uber modern and heavenly. You'll never want to leave.

The Spa

The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel is the perfect place to spend an afternoon (or a whole weekend!) to unwind. The spa facilities include a generous hydrotherapy pool with 5 water experiences that will relieve tired muscles, a sauna, steam room and a thermal hammam table area. In the summer, guests have access to an outdoor rooftop hot tub, the perfect place to clink a glass of bubbly, right?

There are a whole host of treatments on offer at Bedford Lodge including hot stone massages to relieve tension, ESPA facials for all skin types, manicures, pedicures, and holistic options including reflexology.

We tried the Dry Floatation treatment, which has been described as 'physical dreaming' and mimics the feeling of effortlessly floating in water. Simulating complete zero-gravity it allows the body to experience complete weightlessness and encourages the mind and body to drift away into a transcendent state. By isolating the mind from the body, Dry Floatation removes you from any physical stimuli and in turn creates the perfect environment to fall into deep relaxation. In fact, there is evidence to show that the sensation causes your brain waves to move into a theta state which is parallel to that of a young baby or someone who is in deep meditation!

We were impressed! The treatment involved an exfoliation with a lavender body scrub, being wrapped up in foil and then slowly lowered into a chamber for a 20-minute relaxation. It's so relaxing you will probably fall asleep, as we did! Afterwards, we felt completely renewed and restored and can't recommend it enough to worn-out mamas who find it hard to unwind.

Food:

Squires restaurant offers an amazing dining experience with so many delicious options you'll be stuck on what to choose. There are impressive vegetarian options and the double chocolate mousse paired with orange sorbet is sublime. The staff were incredibly attentive and make you feel special and relaxed as soon as you enter. The perfect spot for a date night or a much-needed girly dinner.

Breakfast is also served at Squires, with a choice between ordering cooked breakfasts from the menu and help yourself continental... or a bit of both!
