Summer Activities For Kids: Exeter's Unexpected Festival

A citywide event in Exeter includes plenty of activities and performances for children

With only a few days to go before the kids go back to school, make the most of the weekend. And anyone near Exeter should head into the city for the second instalment of the family friendly Unexpected Festival.

On the back of its successful debut last year, the event brings together everything from magic shows to hula-hoop performances. It’s organised by Exeter City Council to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1.

Little ones can go to the library today to help make poppies and roses for the Let’s Remember Garden, before joining in the musical sing-along (not a Frozen track in earshot…) and doing some biscuit decorating.

Older kids – who like the fear factor – will love joining in with the woodland walks at dusk on Friday and Saturday. They’re themed around scary stories by author Angela Carter, including The Company Of Wolves.

Then on Sunday, the world-renowned NoFit State circus will be filling Princesshay shopping precinct with acrobats, live music and other pretty jaw-dropping acts.

The events are spread out, mostly free and don’t need tickets. Bonus!
