Lara Palamoudian visited Hotel Migjorn in Mallorca with sons Raffi, five, and Alex, two.
When it comes to family holidays, my three main requirements are total relaxation, an excellent beach nearby and enough space for the kids to be able to run around without causing other guests to tut and shake their heads.
The family-owned Hotel Migjorn in Mallorca is child-friendly and in a tranquil rural setting that ticks all the boxes. The owner, Albert, opened a hippie bar in Mallorca’s capital, Palma, in the ’70s and his chilled-out influence is immediately evident here. It’s a world away from the boozy image that parts of the island get a bad press for. This stylish and thoughtfully-designed boutique hideaway is a dream.

Set within gorgeous landscaped grounds with lush greenery and palm trees, the hotel is only 10 minutes away from the beaches Sa Rapita and Es Trenc. These provide turquoise water which is calf high for almost a mile – perfect for toddlers who like to paddle. You’re also only 20 minutes from the airport and Palma, where you can find family-friendly restaurants, as well as lots of lovely boutiques and homeware stores. You can take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage around the city, visit the imposing cathedral and gawp at the huge cruise liners that sail in and out of the harbour.
“The hotel hosts families with toddlers all year round and up to 75% of guests make a repeat visit”
The hotel hosts families with toddlers all year round and up to 75% of guests make a repeat visit, thanks to the super-relaxing atmosphere and warm service. The suites are spacious and comfortable. Ours was perfect for a break with kids thanks to the open-plan living/kitchen area, including microwave and fridge, plus spacious bathroom and big bedroom that comfortably took a double bed, cot and toddler bed. Other thoughtful touches help make this place perfect for families – guests can hire toddler cutlery, toys and highchairs, and borrow DVDs and books from reception. The beautiful outside space has a dedicated, well-stocked play area for youngsters next to a large pool with super-comfy sun loungers and communal pool toys. We picked a spot in the sun alongside other laid-back parents and relaxed as the little ones played safely within sight.
There are both indoor and outdoor dining areas where there’s a breakfast buffet every morning. There are lots of toddler-friendly choices, including frittata, cereal and pastries, which you’re free to eat anywhere in the grounds. Lunch and dinner need to be booked in advance (by 4pm for dinner). My children tucked into pasta and pizza while we had tuna burgers and salad washed down by the biggest G&T I have ever seen!
