New Mum's Retreat: Langdale Hotel & Spa in the Lake District

Section: Travel

Baby-free windows are rare and hard to come by, that's why we have hunted around for the most relaxing and indulgent getaways for new mums. In this week's hot seat we review Langdale Hotel & Spa in Cumbria.

If you're looking for an escape with Insta-worthy views, breathtakingly-peaceful surroundings and a state of the art, modern spa to unwind after months of soothing a colicky baby, then Langdale Hotel certainly ticks all of the boxes. The Langdale estate includes 4- Star hotel accommodation, Brimstone Spa, Stove Restaurant and Bar, Wainwrights' Inn and leisure facilities. Oh and there's a gym for all you fitness fanatics.

The Langdale Hotel is located in the heart of the Lake District National Park and is a 10-minute drive away from Ambleside.

The rooms:

'Boujee' and 'sensual' can best describe the hotel rooms at Langdale hotel, with the 'ultimate bedrooms' having prominent, free-standing baths in the bedroom. Our room (105) had twin baths with water that fell from the ceiling(!) to avoid the whole 'tap-digging-into-your-back' fiasco. We adored it.

However, you don't need to splash out on an ultimate room, if you're working towards a budget. All rooms at Langdale each have a modern bathroom with designer toiletries and luxury robes and feature a flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi and an iPod dock, and the beds have Egyptian cotton sheets.

What's there to do?

As you're in the middle of the Lake District, it's the perfect opportunity to walk and explore! Pick up a bespoke walking map from reception (depending on how long you want to be on your feet!) and take in the wondrous views, which wouldn't look out of place on a postcard.

Brimstone spa:

Brimstone Spa is the place to relax and revive with seven thermal experiences, nine-metre indoor/outdoor relaxation pool and five indoor and outdoor relaxation areas.

From the indoor Himalayan salt steam room to unique shower experiences to the outdoor relaxation hot tub - it’s definitely one of the fancier spas in the UK. In fact, we reckon one of the best of it's kind. You could easily spend the best part of your day in the relaxation rooms feeling pampered and renewed. If you get peckish during your afternoon of relaxation, you can even indulge in the spa deli. We recommend the baked camembert to share. You'll never want to leave.

Food & drink:

Stove Restaurant and Bar is close to the hotel rooms and is open from breakfast till late, with gorgeous views overlooking the waterwheels and fells.

The interiors are surprisingly modern, with retro raspberry and lime-hued chairs. The atmosphere was relaxing and, full of couples, it's the perfect venue for date night.

I opted for the Bubble & Squeak Risotto (exquisite!) and my other half went for the Beef burger, washed down with a Bedrock Bramble cocktail (gin, lemon juice, sugar gomee and Brioteet creme de mure).

If you don't fancy going to Stove and fancy something different, there is Wainwrights' Inn, a traditional Lake District pub, which offers great food (and portion sizes!)
