The best back to school uniform for primary school children

School uniform

It’s that time again. Your children are quickly growing up (sobs) and heading back for another year at school - or maybe for their first year.

Whether it’s their first time at primary school or just one step closer to secondary, you need to invest in everything they need to make the most of their experience. First up is their school uniform.

The uniform is one of the most important parts of school life. Every establishment will have different requirements that need to be met. At some, you’ll be able to buy your little ones smart black trainers, whereas others won’t let them through the door. Before you buy, make sure you take the time to get to know the school uniform guidelines.

If you’re already familiar with what they can and can’t have, keep on reading or save this page for later. It might sound like common sense, but you’re going to end up spending SO much money on essentials like polo tops. To make life easier when your girls and boys are getting taller, we’ve pulled together this list of some of the best items needed for school. Think warm sweatshirts, comfortable trousers, cute pinafore dresses and smart black shoes! Don't forget to grab them a great rucksack, too.

Watch your little sunflower grow in this sweatshirt. The sizes do come up slightly bigger for the age range, but this is good to give them room to sprout up. A baggy fit is better than buying new jumpers every couple of months. With colours available from classic navy to yellow and green jumpers, you'll find the right one for your kid's school.

Kids don’t have to be taking part in arts and crafts to cover themselves in everything. Whether it's their lunch, dirt from the playground or stains from their handwriting pen, you name it - it'll be down them. This durable shirt will still look fantastic after regular washing and shouldn’t crease too much. Well, if you get it straight out of the washing machine anyway.

From walking to school to games at break time and being comfortable during class time, these shoes fit the bill. The chunky strap means they can come off and be put on effortlessly and the padded collar and insole means they're ultra-comfy.

These simple strap shoes feature silver-coloured stars, so they're bound to be a favourite with the kids. They have cushioned padding and Micro-Fresh® technology to prevent odours developing, as well as being scruff-resistant.

Want smart trousers that’ll withstand outdoor play all year round? Pick this pleated pair for your boy to rock at school. To ensure he’s comfortable all day, the waist adjuster gives him plenty of room. Plus, it comes with a belt to ensure they fit as best as possible.

These pinafores both look good and are affordable, ranging from ages 4-13. They're on-the-knee length and have a permanent pleat for easy ironing. Perfect for warm autumn and summer days, this pack of pinafores should be a staple for any girls’ school wardrobe.

Available in grey, navy or black, these high-waisted pleated skirts are ideal for school use. Made from polyester, they have a zip fastening at the side and are a comfortable fit.

If you're looking to save money on high quality school clothing, these ex-M&S shirts are a great find. Suitable for ages 3-16 years, if your child's school requests white shirts, these can be your go-to.

These gingham summer dresses bring back some memories, don't they? Whatever colour scheme your child's school has, there will be one to suit. The sizes range from age three upwards, and you'll even receive a sweet matching bobble.

While the weather is still warm, your little one will need to stay cool in the classroom, and we think the best way to do this is with these shorts. Available in ages 3 to 13 years, this two-pack is fantastic value.

We're not exactly sure what PE classes are going to look like, but one thing that is for certain is how cheap these shoes are... For less than a cup of coffee you can take these home -  they're an absolute bargain.

How adorable is this gingham school playsuit? Ok, so it is just a variation of a summer dress, but it's amazing nevertheless... Available in blue or red, kids aged three to 13 can wear this comfortably in the summer months.

Does your little one have to wear a shirt to school? Pick up this pack of shirts in white, grey, cream or blue - just ensure you follow school uniform guidelines. It's good to know that these are available in sizes two to three years, right up to age 15 to 16.
