The best toddler puddlesuits - an essential for rainy weather

The best toddler puddlesuits

As an adult, we don’t think much of wearing a jacket or coat when it’s raining; but when you’re a toddler, you need a bit more protection from the weather.

I admit I didn’t really think about a puddlesuit for my little boy until we went out to play in the rain, his trousers got soaked within about 3 seconds, and the lightbulb flashed on. I ordered a new puddlesuit that afternoon, and I haven’t looked back since.

Puddlesuits are aptly named because they are awesome in puddles – as are toddlers. We all know how a toddler is drawn to a puddle, no matter the size, and a good puddlesuit protects their clothes and keeps them warm and dry.

If you’re going on holiday in Britain, they’re a must – remember to pack your toddler’s puddlesuit and no matter what the weather when you arrive at your holiday home, you’ll be prepared. Also remember their wellies, too.

And don’t go thinking that they’re just for winter, either. You can get a fleece-lined puddlesuit that’s great for cold weather, but it’s also a good idea to have a thinner one for spring and summer – we know those rain showers happen all year round.

Puddlesuits are also good for messy play, or outdoors painting, protecting clothes from paint, jelly, and other things.

How did we choose the best puddlesuits?

We have several mums on Team Mother&Baby who all passed on their recommendations for the best puddlesuits; we also have a big panel of real mums who test products for the annual Mother&Baby Awards, who test items thoroughly and give us their truthful opinions.

We look at the best and newest products on the market, finding out first which brands have launched new puddlesuits, and reviewing them to find out if they’re worth recommending to you. We also always look at customer ratings and reviews on the brands’ websites, too.

Here you go - our shortlist of the best toddler puddlesuits:

Trespass is a well-known brand when it comes to adults' outdoors clothing and equipment, so it makes sense that their children's gear is quality too. It's available in a range of bright colours, and in sizes from 12-18 months. It's fleece-lined, with elasticated cuffs and ankles.

I bought this for my son Eli, who's three, when we arrived on holiday in Wales earlier this year to realise a) it would be raining every day and b) someone had forgotten to pack his existing puddlesuit. We tried going for a walk with Eli in just a coat, but it only lasted half an hour before he looked like a drowned rat. I immediately logged on to the internet and found this on Amazon, and luckily it could be delivered the next day - which was an absolute must. It's warm with the fleece lining, as well as keeping him nicely dry underneath; the elasticated cuffs and ankles are essential for keeping tight around wellies and gloves to keep as much rainwater out as possible.

  • Long zip right down to the foot
  • Elasticated cuffs and ankles
  • Fleece lining
  • Free delivery

This puddlesuit is as practical as it is cute! Packable into its own pouch the waterproof one-piece will keep your little one dry and snug in those inevitable downpours. Simply keep it in your buggy or bag so it's never far out of reach. It features hood, fully taped seams, wetseal zip fastening and elasticated cuffs and stirrups for the feet and better yet it's adorned with a statement stripe.

  • Machine washable.
  • 100% Polyester.

To get a bit technical, this puddlesuit is tested to withstand 1,500mm of rain in a 24 hour period, suitable for light to moderate rain; it's available in red, navy, or blue with dinosaurs, and in sizes from 6-12 months to 18-24 months.

My son Eli had the dinosaur version last year, before he grew out of it (which seems to happen in the blink of an eye). The fleece lining kept him warm and he stayed dry despite jumping in puddles up to his bottom.

  • One long zip for easy dressing
  • Elasticated cuffs and ankles
  • Fleece lining

This Kid's Printed Waterproof Suit from Regatta is made from is made of waterproof Isolite fabric with taped seams. With a full-length zip for easy on-off and reflective trims.

Available in a range of colours and patterns, we love this bright pink design with unicorns and rainbows!

Review: 'This is a lightweight all in one coat and looks great on, my little one is 18 months and it’s a tad big but doesn’t matter because it’s got the elastic cuffs. Recommend!'

  • Machine washable.
  • 100% Polyester.

This puddlesuit from JoJo will keep little ones super warm and protected from the elements. It has elasticated cuffs and tapered seams, making it 100% waterproof. For sizes up to 18 months you can fold the cuffs back to give little hands extra protection; the hood has a peak which I think is essential for keeping drips off little faces. It's a feature we don't think about so much with our adult clothing, but remember that toddlers are looking up at us a lot, so are more likely to get a face full of rain!

M&B Digital Editor Maria Martin has this puddlesuit for her son, Parker; she said: "I highly recommend this puddlesuit. It keeps Parker warm and dry on our outdoor walks, which we've been doing more than ever this year. The design is bright and cheery and he loves wearing it."

  • Fleece lining
  • Elasticated cuffs and ankles
  • Tapered seams
  • Peaked hood
  • Mitten clips

Another fabulous duck outfit, ideal for rainy days and jumping in puddles. I think you should team this up with orange wellies for the ultimate impact. It's available from 0-3 months to 2-3 years. It fastens with a zip and poppers, and has a fleece lining to stay cosy and warm on cold days.

Bought by JacqE who said: "My daughter looks super cute in this. It is well made & has a lovely fleece lining. I bought it with growing room so I could layer up underneath when the weather gets colder."

  • Duck design hood
  • Zip and popper fastening
  • Fleece lining

This unisex navy stars puddlesuit is a great pick for layering up over warmer clothes. It's lightweight and waterproof, so will see you through to spring showers too.

One review said: 'Funky design, good length and nice fit all round. Can see us getting plenty of use out of this puddlesuit!'

  • Machine washable.
  • 100% Polyester.

With added safety aspects, this is a serious puddlesuit for serious puddle-jumping toddlers. In a bright yellow that means you won't miss where they've run off to, this rain suit features reinforced knees and bottom - which is improtant given how much time toddlers spend falling over and rolling around. It's available from 12-18 months to 5-6 years. The lining is recycled, and we love an eco-friendly aspect.

One feature that the other puddlesuits don't have is a detatchable hood, which we think is useful if you're using the puddlesuit for messy play or painting.

  • Elasticated cuffs and ankles
  • Stirrups
